RE: wtf? - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 10:20 AM
I am just going to make one or two more points, or echo previously made statements, points that I think are valid for the health of the site, as a whole.

1) Speaking personally, I come hear as often as I do, because of the "community", for the bull excrement. When I contribute my two cents to real threads it is because I am here, and I then see questions that I can help with. (not that I am the most educated bodybuilder, but I have certainly some valuable contributions to make). I am not going to log on more than once a day to scan through beginner posts to see how I can be helpful, I am actually not going to do that even once a day.

2) OOB is where we learn who these avatars and sign in's are. It is easy enough to type a good game in training, nutrition, or supplements, especially if you are brief and absolutest in your delivery. When people get to rambling, it is much harder to hide age, intelligence level, actual lifestyle habits, basically the story behind the facade (and of course that is fake-able too, but not as easy to do consistently) . OOB, not only helps to get to know people in general terms, it helps users figure who's advice they are going to take, or should take.

3) Have you ever lived in a house with out a junk drawer? OOB is our junk drawer, with out a designated place to throw your junk, junk ends up being thrown everywhere. It is much more likely than not that junk is going to be thrown much more regularly around "real" portions of this forum.

OOB is where we learn who each other is, where we help each other out with life's issues, we blow off some steam, we mourn our losses and celebrate our triumphs, we share laughs, we share common experiences, many of which are common only because of our bodybuilding, that is our community. Many useful bodybuilding info has been passed via OOB, yes, it is the minority of that portion, tiniest little bit, but it still was there.

The community will be lost with out it.

Kris it is your site, you do what ever you see fit, I mean of course you do and should, I can understand your reasons why, but I don't think it will help the overall health of this place.

haha i may stick around just to watch getnswole get owned all the time.

but seriously i think some time should be put into making a new OOB, even if it does have to be moderated better.

i agree with maverick about those mods, and twisted too would be good. i dont know how long silverfox has been around but he seems cool and is open to peoples opinions.

Kris,

you've said several times that admins and moderators don't have or want to take the time to actively moderate the OOB..

Moderators volunteer.. They volunteer because the like the community here and want to make it better.. correct?

The problem I've seen with most of the mods here excluding a few.. like ripped.. is once they become a moderator they disappear??   If not disappear.. they certainly stop posting and quit being a part of the community.. at least that's how it seems to me..

there are plenty of active members here that would be more than willing to moderate.. When someone grows tired of doing it, simply let them off the hook and recruit someone else.. it's not like there's a shortage of good people here who wouldn't be willing to help...

IMO that reasoning is only an excuse and not a real reason..

FYI.. I'm here trying to lead the troops into battle over OOB.. The entire time I've been a member here I think it would be safe to say that less than 10% of my posts have been in OOB..

but seriously.. how hard would it be to have a few dedicated volunteer mods to cover oob and help keep it clean.... From what I've seen, some of the battles that take place in the other areas are just as bad if not worse than some of the OOB stuff..

People who enjoy causing problems usually don't discriminate and are willing to cause problems in just about every area of the forum..

ya I agree. I mean if you reopen OOB and get more mods it will be better then having no OOB at all which will probably have a lot of people leaving.

The only mods I ever saw actually doing something were Rippedchick and Nic. I've also seen several members try to keep peace around here. Soccerking, twisted, and SilverFox mainly. Hell even Yets stopped some stuff from going over board. Good Riddance also stops arugements when ever he can.

So my point is, why not just say no personal attacks and obcenity, and mean it. Then you could incorparate things like NBS's suggestion etc. Stuff like that will make the forum run smoother.

I HAVE AN IDEA!!!!

This can eliminate all the worries about legal troubles and worrying about having to constantly enforce the rules, which puts too much work and pressure on the mods.

When you first log onto this site (or maybe just OOB), have a screen that appears that says something like:

WARNING:

This site may contain material that is may not be suitable for people under 18 years of age.  Some of the material may contain sexual, religious, or political content.  Do you still wish to proceed?

Yes           No

Or something along those lines.

The stuff we talk about really isn't that bad, but you could warn people that the content on the site may be found inappropriate, and they can enter at their own risk.

Just a thought.

No, offensive material Bri. We don't need a rated R thread.

More like, do not enter unless you can tell someone your opinion and not get angry if the other persons differs. Because thats what happens. Just look at the last line of Kingyotos sig.
