I can curl more with a bar then dumbbells. The distribution of the weight; stronger arm helping out; there are many factors. But if you can curl 135 lbs for reps, that doesn't mean you will pick up the 65 lbs and blow out the same reps. Although close maybe. At one point (Max-OT days) I could curl 135 lbs for about 6 reps and do the 65 lbs for about the same. But it's different for everybody and it makes sense what you said.
