To look good. To compete. They like the sport (is it a sport?) For a hobby. I personally powerlift..but its basically the same, because I like the challenge to get ur body into peak strength/condition. Its a challenege but if u can conquer it ur good.

Well, I'm no teenager, but I hope it helps for your project. (1) to look good (2) to feel good, physically (3) to build/support self-esteem (4) to enhance/generate a positive body image (5) to offset the degeneration of aging (strength, posture, joint issues . . . ). (6) to be sexually attractive Those are my biggies. Good luck on your project, and let us know how it goes!

I can guentee you that many if not most of the huge roid taking bodybuilders were not the popular kids at school. THey were either the fat kids, or the scrawny kids, or the weird kids, and people looked down upon them, so they started lifting to gain respect and it became an obession. I can tell from personal experience that I used to be the scrawny kid that got bullied when i was younger, and I started lifting weights so I wouldnt get bullied and I could gain respect, and sadly I accually have, and its become an obsession for me to get bigger and bigger.

ORIGINAL: mustang <snip> . . . and sadly I accually have, and its become an obsession for me to get bigger and bigger. Why is it "sad"? I think I know why he said that, but I'll let Mustang answer if he wants. Personally, I think it's sad that that's what it takes for some people to give a s**t about you, or give you respect. I said it in a previous post, and I'll say it again: nothing about me has changed but my appearance. I'm still the same warm-hearted, caring, supportive, easygoing guy I've ever been, but if people want to chum up to me all of a sudden who wanted nothing to do with me before just because I'm filling out my shirts a little more these days, I have half a mind to tell them to "get bent". I mean, how shallow is that? And yet, we can't escape it. If you really think about it, yeah, bulking up and getting ripped to shreds does endear you to a certain type of people who wouldn't give you the time of day as a 90-pound weakling. But then, if you dwell on it long enough, you start second-guessing everyone's motives who shows you the slightest kindness or appreciation. That, I believe, is where a lot of the really nasty personalities in professional bodbuilding comes from: guys who were picked on as kids, hit the gym with a vengeance and an axe to grind, and now spend their time throwing their weight around. The only thing they forgot to build was their maturity. Not everyone lets it go to their head, but those who do stick out like a sore thumb.

well im certainly mr unpopular from school and i didnt start bodybuilding to get respect, i started it so when someone next hit me-i could punch there ****ing head in, unfortunately this backfired thanks to my genetics of not letting me add much poundage until a good 30 years of age like every other male in my family, no exxageration, every male younger than 30 is a scrawny yet very very VERY tall streak of piss then at 30 they pack on ****ING HELLA amounts of muscle then aged 45-50 onwards 80% start packing on fat LOL. Thats the way im gonna go too it seems I used to bodybuild to get big to protect myself, in general the only thing ive noticed getting bigger are my biceps, everything else wont grow, so ive kind of given up before and kind of have now, i guess i could afford driving and gym but in some ways i just cant be bothered because ive spent £100's on food and gym and didnt gain a lbs from it. sit on my arse 2 weeks later and i grow 2 inches and gain 6lbs weightgain is free for me, im one of them late male growers, and it pisses me off.

I am the same person but I have become a more popular person in this shallow world where looks seem to be everything to teenage girls. Its kind of sad though, Im obsessed with body building to the point where Im on sites reading about it or working out every minute of my free time. I want to be bigger, stronger, its an obsession that may never end for me, which is why i found it sad. It started out as a way to protect myself, and now I am obsessed with my image and trying to be bigger then as big as possible. I talk to my girlfriend about lifting weights and getting bigger all the time....Thats how i know im obsessed to the point where its pathetic

There's nothing "pathetic" about wanting to make a difference in your own life. The fact that you recognize how shallow people can be proves that you're already on your way to developing a sense of equilibrium with regard to your preoccupation. Sooner or later it hits every one of us -no matter how competitive we are, or how far along in our progress we get: there is always someone bigger, with better genetics, or who started earlier and will always look sexier. When that reality sinks in, you find that it's much easier to surrender to it and your priorities shift dramatically. Almost overnight, you come to grips with the fact that the only person who can ever let you be satisfied with your body is YOU. And when that happens, you find yourself training because you LOVE it, and because you crave the sensations it brings -not because you're chasing that perpetually moving target of public approval. I won't kid you -I'm not there by a long shot. I do derive a lot more personal enjoyment from working out than I ever did in the past, but I still find myself slipping into envy and regret every once in a while. Shoot, an hour ago, just as I was pulling into the parking lot at my tanning salon, Bob Paris' twin brother comes strolling out of the joint with his sleeves rolled up, sporting two of the sickest, most defined guns I've seen on a guy my age in years. Right away, I start comparing notes, kicking myself for the ten years I spent pissing and moaing about how everyone else MUST be on 'roids, instead of just picking up the iron and making it happen. And, almost as quickly, that tiny voice in the back of my head chimed in, "you ARE making it happen, jacka$$! He's been beating those triceps into shape for years, and you KNOW it. That's nothing that time, focus, perserverance, and sensible training won't do for you too. Now cut the crap and keep your eyes on your OWN prize!"
