I don't think it's the eating that's the problem on this diet for most of us. I think it's that you can't really drink alcohol on this diet lol!

Re:why you should be on keto - Monday, July 20, 2009 1:26 PM ( #152 )
so i've been reading up on the keto diet and think i'll give it a shot. I've lifted off and on for about 10 years. Last 2 years was a straight bulk.. my size and strength have gone up substanitally. However now im at about 275lbs, and wanting to drop back down to about 225. obviously went a little overboard with the eating but man it was a blast. We just booked a trip to myrtle beach in 6 weeks... wanting to start keto tomorrow, what is a realistic loss in lbs in 6 weeks... also what are the different type of keto diets and which would work for my goal, which is as much fat as possible as quicky as possible.

saw ckd, tdk, and cdk and unsure of the differences.

Its not any worse on this diet than on any diet.  Its never going to help you to drink alcohol but Id say drinking during the no carb phase wouldnt be as bad as say drinking on a bulk or drinking on the carb load.

Ok cool. Say you have a drink mid-week, wednesday. You get knocked out of ketosis. Should you carry on as usual come thursday morning and carb-up on the weekend as you usually would?

I have only one dedicated lifting day in the week, Saturday/Carbup day.

I do a lot of weighted and unweighted calisthenics in the week, and run on every day except saturday, will I be able to go into ketosis in a timely manner, 1-2 days?

lol yes...and its only gonna kick you out while theres alcohol in you.  Once its all burned, youll be right back in.  Its easy to cut while drinking alot (I cut to around 6.5% last year while drinking a ton) Just realize that alcohol will make you weaker and smaller than what you could be and gaining strength while cutting and drinking alot is pretty much impossible.

Guys if you could. Can someone post a long list of foods to eat while on the keto diet? I am sort of following RS's. But bacon isnt my favorite... Bacon wrapped chicken... thats good.

Also, how much are you supposed to eat. Like what is a good amount of fats/protein in the average meal?

I probably get 60 % fats, 40 % protein roughly - Burgers with cheese on top, delicious.

I really, even though i understand the basics to this. Burgers with cheese on top. Bacon. jesus christ.... It just doesnt seem like... Oh well, not going to argue i assume.

Also, the carb up days should be once every week roughly? Also, kind of excercise should i be doing on the carb up day?

Yes, it's the alcohol thing that I was worried about.  I know I can stay strict to a diet no problem.

I don't drink on the weekdays, only weekends, so I'd just have my carb up day fall on a Wednesday or something like that.

So this depletion workout thing.....I'm a little confused as to what the difference is.

I basically do an upper lower split right now.  It's a 4-day split (deadlift, squat, bench, and OH press day), but I only lift 3 days/week.  My a** is pretty much whooped after every session.  Would I modify one of these workouts to not be so strength oriented right before I do the carb-up?

Depends on what you are drinking and how much you are drinking. Theoretically you should be able to stay in ketosis if you keep your carbs below 30 grams a day. Depends on the person though

Any routine is fine.  I just know that I remember hearing RS say something about a "depletion workout" or something that happens right before the recarb.  I was wondering if that is an extra workout, or a modification to one of my existing ones.

Sorry I dont even think I record the depletion workouts.  But last time I remember just doing bench/rows back to back, OH press/pullups, bis/tris, hexbar deadlifts/shrugs all for about 2-3 sets of 50 reps.  Its not that fun to do because I dont really have a goal in mind as far as weight and reps go but I just get it done pretty quick and then its on to the carb-load.

I'm wondering if something like this would be acceptable to have on a carb up day, keep in mind I will have help eating it.

Looks darn good, I might make a cherry flavor if its acceptable, if not, I'll stick to loads of oatmeal, cereal and sandwhiches.

Its all over this thread but traditionally carb load once a week, depletion workout before carb load, no more workouts or cardio for duration of carb load.

Oh, that helps a lot thanks.

Sorry, ive been keeping up with this since like page 8 or something. Read pages 1 and 2 though :D

So im sure this was answered, but the carb load days are what actually builds you during this diet, im assuming. So the day after carb load, does it make sense to do a heavey full body day?

RS how long does your carb load last? I've been reading 24-30 hours and people start, say friday evening untill saturday night. Would you eat carbs before you went to bed on friday and saturday night in this situation?

There are places that say that.  I actually feel best 2 days after the carb load and not 1, though I dont really notice strength loss at all during the no carb phase.

IMO though, there is pretty much no one on this board that shouldnt be doing fullbody anyway.

Starting at night doesnt seem optimal to me just because of the fact that youll be asleep for hours and missing the chance to restore glycogen.  I wake up early on my carb up day and go right to the gym, and start after that.  It lasts about 12 hours for me.  I dont like to go beyond that, when I stop getting pumped up and start getting more smooth and bloated I cut it off as thats when it seems that I get fat spillover.  Im really lean though, so itd be alot easier for me to notice this cutoff than most others.

I mean, i split it to push/pull/legs. It takes like 3-4 days to work the whole body. I was wondering if i should get a nice routine that works the whole body on the day after the carb load.

My personal favorite is the upper/lower split.  You just have to realize that glycogen is gonna slowly go down throughout the week and you wanna hit your most important muscle on a split right after the carb up, but thats just one more reason I think splits suck.

Better IMO to hit the entire body within the next 2 days after the carb load.
