why

yeah i know this has been said a million time but seriously why do so many people use a weight belt when they squat. i saw 3 people squat the other, which i must say is a rarity, and all of them bigger than me, all under 200lbs on the bar, none of them going parrelell and all of them using a weight belt. why a weight belt?? is it just trend? do they think they need it? wtf?
No the leg press is not the same as doing squats.

Why do people use the maxi pad when they squat? Why do people that are 140 lbs. and skinny as a rail spend hours on bicep workouts? Some questions just can not be answered.

Most of them wear belts because they think it will prevent back injuries. Some do have a weak back and need one. Some because it looks cool...
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

well to elaborate more on what Nic said, people wear the belt to protect their back. But the belt is actually intended to brace your ab's not your back. thats why all those belts that are 6 inches in the back and 2 inches in the front are fail. You want a belt that is the same size all the way around. I wear a belt for anything over 300 lb's (squats/deads)... im such a p**** :)

yes i understand that belts serve there puprose and that most gyms (at least mine) provide the improper ones and those are the onse these people were using were the wrong ones doing nothing. my point, is that they were using them while doing minimal amount of weight. anybody doing actual squats with close to or over 3 plates can wear a belt all they want. but when you see a 6' 200+ lb guy that is pretty big doing 1/4 squats with 185 lbs with a belt on it looks funny and i'm gonna laugh. simple as that. also if it would have just been 1 guy, i propably would have chalked it up to a bad back or something, but it was a group of them all using one.
