why do we bulk? - Tuesday, September 02, 2008 6:07 AM
hi guys...

right, i am on a cut atm... now ive got rid of most of my excess fat, ive cut out the cardio, and im still losing weight fine with the lifting and diet....

my point is, im still gaining muscle on my cut.  and my diet is roughly all protein and fiberous veg and minimal carbs. i do however have 1 carb rich meal for breakfast and limited for rest of day...

if i am gaining muscle on a cut, and losing fat and getting cut, then why once ive reached my target bf% , if i want to then get bigger, would i go on  a bulk?

does bulking make you gain muscle quicker than cutting? or just make you gain mass in general...

im only asking as im nearly there as far as my goal. but eventually want to be bigger... what next? carry on same or bulk again?

how are you tracking that you are actually gaining muscle?

when you lose bodyfat you might appear 'bigger' because you are seeing more definition, etc.

you might have short periods where you can gain muscle and lose fat, but its not gunna keep working for long. bulking is gunna be your best bet.
bulking/strength training

Sounds like a clean bulk will be your friend. You could essentially be on a clean bulk forever really. You will not be gaining very much fat while putting on muscle consistently. Just keep the calories a little above maintenance and keep the food clean. Some people like it, some don't.
I am a fan. it's all up to you.

2 questions !

Why did you cut if you were thinking about gaining weight afterwards, were you really enjoying cutting ??

Is you chest really 48" because it is fairly small for a 6'5" man with 18' arms ! ?

If you are losing body weight, eating below your caloric maintenance level.. It's impossible to add muscle mass.  As the other poster mentioned.. you might appear to be gaining muscle mass due to more definition of the muscle showing from fat loss and of course you may be having strength gains... those two factors could easily give the illusion of gaining mass...

We bulk to add muscle mass. Depending on how you bulk determines the ratio of fat and muscle added.

right on, you may get stronger however but that doesnt necessarily mean you have more muscle, just a better neuromuscular connection.  Also bulking ensures you are meeting and surpassing the caloric need for your body to grow, in essence making sure you have the cement to build the foundation.

yes i think you may be right and its just the loss of fat giving the impression of more muscle. thanks for clearing it all up...

i went on a cut even tho i eventually wanted to be bigger in the long run, because when i first arrived at this site, i had already started lifting of my own accord, i was aslo very over weight. i was told to cut first beacuse of my weight. now i am cut, i have decided i want to be bigger.

my chest is now about 50" i need to update my sig, saying that my arms r big in comparison.

thanks for all the help once again. clean bulk to come!
