whey protein shake - with soy milk?
-

We've all heard about how it is bad to use our PWO whey with dairy milk due to the slow properties of casein as coagulates in the stomach. but I really hate using water with my whey... - what about soy milk - is that a good alternative? I still want the best results from my PWO whey - just wanna make it a bit more fun then whey with water... I still drink dairy milk of course - but I just keep it seperate from my whey protein...

You could mix soy milk with whey protein. That way you'd get the benefits of both types of proteins and their respective amino acid makeups. I see no issues with this mix. Whatever shortfalls with the soy mix, you are making up with the whey protein. You'd just be changing the taste really.

thanks MDA - thats what I was thinking... then I got this responce on an other board: There is nothing wrong with making whey shakes with dairy milk, it just isn't the very best postworkout situation. Soy milk is far worse than dairy. It digests even slower, and has the taste is not any better than with water. The protein is poor quality, and it promotes systemic estrogen. IMO soy milk is worthless to bodybuilders. Soy milk will not make your pwo shake any more tasty. And, really, if you are going to that extreme to get maximum results, taste is not an issue. Make it with water and a little sugar, and knock it back. It ain't that bad. the taste issue is moot - I have tried it and I like it - but the other points he raises are new to me. He didn't provide any proof or further info. so now I am confused again - need to do more research I guess...

It doesn't really matter about the rest. You have the whey.. so the soy not being as biologically efficient , or poor quality is not relevant. You only wanted to make the taste change and you liked soy.. if I read your first post correctly. Soy isn't any good to bodybuilders. I agree. But.. BUT.. you aren't comparing soy or whey.. you are simply doing soy milk to change the taste. You have the whey in there which is all you really need. As far as soy promoting systemic estrogen, you'd need a whole lot more then a couple of 8 oz glasses of soy to make that fact come true. Studies show that while that is true, you need quite a lot of soy daily for it to make any difference. Soy milk will make them tastier.. if you like soy over water or milk. Taste is a personal preference so they cannot make the assumption for you that it won't make it taste any better. My feelings are, if you don't like the taste, no matter how great or efficient something is, you aren't' likely to continue to do it. Summary: As long as you are doing the whey protein mixed with soy milk, you aren't losing anything. Only changing the taste to your preferences. And that little amount of soy will not promote enough estrogen in your male body to make any differences. The above post is true only if you are comparing a soy protein post-workout method over whey. But you aren't. You are having whey just adding soy milk for flavor. Oh and FYI, if you drink alcohol it has some estrogen effects as well. So the guy above posting might not like soy but knocks back a 6-pack weekly is getting similar effects.

MDA: - as ussual - thnx. my concern is simply this -I am sold on the idea that dairy milk might "slow" the whey down, so I am avoiding that with PWO whey. I just want to verify that soy doesn't have a similar effect -otherwise I am willing to stay with water. boyrancher6250: PWO = post work out this is considered the important 15-45 minutes after a work out. you should get a whey shake in, and then about 60 minutes later have a good meal. the debate is what "delivery system" to use for that important PWO protein. lots of guys use dextrose and water. this is a way of cretaing an insilun spike using a high GI carb. I agree that dairy milk is not a good idea for PWO - at other times, who cares about the speed your whey gets in you, but PWO you want it as fast as possible. read this: milk and whey and this: casein vs. whey

It's from Canada. Can't trust them dude. It makes sense though. I usually mix a shake with milk at bed or sometime during the day for the extra calories. But PWO, I'm just happy with whey and water to get the stuff in ASAP. Do your soy milk shakes any other then then PWO. Just mix it with water so there's no other types of proteins competing. Although I've never heard of soy slowing down digestion.

There are probably 100000000000000000000000 other things you could improve and you worry about caseine? If you survive 10 years in the iron game, this might gain you 1/10 of a pound... just mix it with milk and be happy that it tasts ok...

Are you saying that, I mean obviously exaggerated but, whey protein doesn't really do much at all? And that it would take you that long to build muscle? Please explain to me, snapIT...Is whey really not a big deal in your opinion? When I was working-out a couple years ago I found that it made a huge difference in my gains. I didn't feel deprived of any good nutrients. You obviously know what you are talking about, so I am interested to hear what you think.

He is saying that mixing it with milk versus water will make little difference, not that whey protein has little effect.

the slow properties of casein as coagulates in the stomach In some cases, this is a plus. Casein is digested much more slowly than whey, and therefore if you aren't going to be able to eat for a few hours, it can provide a longer term supply of protein. I find this particularly useful before bedtime.
