I agree with Dwood.. but it's about curiosity. I'm not getting the impression here that anybody is one-upping anybody.

My goals are my own.. it would be more foolish for me to try and do something crazy like squat 405 right now. But in the effort to keep this alive as I see some validity to the fact that everybody who has posted here has something in common..

Not the weight
Not the reps

We all want to improve what we do. If you bench 60 lbs.. fine. But I bet your goal is the same as mine.. IMPROVE.

And yet my bud CPL has a point.. it ain't all about the bench. Boyrancher said.. what's everyone's strength? He never said bench.

Additions:

Cable row: 250
T-bar: 185
Dumbbell curls: 70
Weight dips: body weight + 90

As a somewhat beginner I can say than one of the most discouraging things that there is, is to think that if you can't bench 200lbs plus you should be embarrassed to go to the gym. I don't think this thread is helping.

True.. if somebody said that. This thread helps me.. to know that everyday I go into the gym I got my DB brothers and sisters in various locations in the world cheering me along to do my best.

I work out at work- A bunch of the guys chipped in and we got a nice bench and a ton of weights. At first, everyone was into it, but after some time, people started dropping out- One in particular sticks out in my mind when I think of this thread, and what you guys posted. He didn't want to work out with the rest of us since he couldn't lift what we were lifting. The thing is, two of the heavy lifters were simply born that way- Huge guys, no definition, but naturally strong. Neither one had lifted anything in years, and within a few weeks were benching over three hundred pounds. This guy felt embarassed because he couldn't even lift the weight they warmed up with, so he gave up.
Me, at the time, I was only pressing around 160 pounds. Ever since then, I've been working hard towards my own goals, not to anyone else's standards. Now, I'm pressing close to 260, and I will be pressing 300 by the end of the summer. The funny thing is, those big guys I talked about never really work anything but their upper bodies- They're able to bench around three hundred, but they cringe when I outlift them in just about every other area.
I tried to tell the guy that quit that it's all about your personal best, and he should keep at it, but I guess he just quits easy. As long as people can keep it in their heads that hard work and determination pays off big time when it comes to this, the whole competitive aspect should not be able to stop you. There's always someone stronger than me, and everyone else here- But we still lift because it's not about "I can lift more than you", it's about "I can lift more than I did last month."
By the way, for everyone who's lifting what they think are light weights right now- Here's the amount of weight I was working with only seven months ago, when I started taking things seriously.
Bench- 167 pounds
Squat- 158 pounds
Deadlift- 140 pounds

No doubt you stick around here.. keep working out, eating right and training hard.. you will be doing a lot more.. and then college and then later.. heck man.. at 14.. work on form and good nutrition.. you have plenty O' Time ahead. And benching 167? Great. I was 18 and I think I did 70 on those Nautilus bench machines... you are ahead of the game already.

Not a strength competition dude.. I'm sure that guy who does 2500 lb squats.. beats anybody posting here. Except Twin Peak. That guy is pretty strong as well.

The only competition you got is yourself.

yeah...the only reason i listed bench is becuase that seems to be my priority right now...doin bench competitions and trying to get silly t-shirts that say 275 bench press club....im weak in the legs but no drive to do so...i mean my workout buddy has hit 435 for max and i know i will never get close to him so i try to go as HIGH as i can go for bench press.....i dont care who else does what or anything...all for ME

workout weights:
bench 215
curls 55
weighted dips(not anymore) weight plus 100
overhead dumbell press 65

Hmm I guess I'll post up some other stuff.... don't laught at me tho!!!

Age: Still 14
Weight: Still 129
DB Curl: 25's in each hand (10 reps)
Dips: Never tried weighted but I can do at least 20 when my tri's are fresh
Leg Press: 340 10 reps (never tried any more)

I don't squat in fear that I will drop the bar on myself or that I will do the form wrong and screw up my already bad knees...

Thanks for the positive thinking. I know it's not a competition, but I still know I have a long way to go. I'm doing my best to improve though, and that's what matters most.

i know when im workin out in the gym, im always lookin to see what the guys my size are lifting and i am TOPPED out on some things, but everyone has to start off LOW and SLOW...kinda of like crawling, walking, running, then sprinting....i guess im "walking" right now...but a positive attitude is a BIG fatcor and showing up in the gym is HALF the battle..so if u show up ur ahead of the game....then actually doing something productive is the other half of the fight.....

Does matter dude.. your goals are your goals. When I started out in high school, I never did the free weight bench. And maybe at most I was doing 70 lbs. When I got to 225 about a year ago.. I about crapped my pants (from happiness not strain) I was so happy.

The only person that can give you that kind of personal satisfaction is yourself.

Like I said.. we're all moving forward and that's the only thing we need to have in common.
