Welcome to DBB! Great question! It means different things to different people, but the two most common contexts I hear that term used in are: - Bulking without the use of AAS, Prohormones, or other dietary/pharmaceutical assistance. Supplement use may be limited to a multi-vitamin and a protein shake.
or - Adhering to a stricter, more sensible diet during the bulking cycle, rather than binging on carbs and trying to set a daily calorie consumption record. The goal is to limit fat gain during the cycle.
Unfortunately, too many bodybuilding types think bulking up must necessarily consist of gorging yourself every three hours and inhaling every food item that comes within arm's reach. Consequently, most people think the only way to gain muscle is to pack on N pounds and then burn half of it back off again. It needn't be that way. We've had this discussion many times before -whether packing it on rapidly and then burning off the fat you gained in the process stimulates a greater hormonal response than just gaining the muscle cleanly and gradually, but for my money, there's no better way to bulk than "clean". Why make twice the work for yourself?

Pasta's should be multi-grain and not white, potatoes are good but if possible try and make them sweet potatoes. Don't throw in greens when you can, throw them in all the time! Greens are a great source of fibre as well as being packed full of nutrients. I completely agree with vegg about bulking, there is absolutely no point in piling mountains of disgusting foods into your body in the name of 'bulking'. The amount of excess calories your body is actually going to be using won't go up simply because your eating 6000 a day, at least not enough to cover the increase. Then once you've packed on 20lb and half of its fat your going to spend 12 weeks cutting it all off? You end up looking like garbage for alot of the year and then end up losing some of your hard earned gains during a prologned cutting cycle. Plus a harsh cutting cycle is a hard diet to follow, especially for a person used to shoving their face all the time. This often causes alot of people to give up on cutting and go back to bulking, its a shame that so many people recommend these fast food diets because there easy calories. Theres going to be a difference between when your cutting and bulking, but that should come from the quantity of the foods your earting, not the quality. John
