In my opinion, if he was THAT talented and phenomenal he could have helped his reputation and avoided the cloud of suspicion over his perfomance had he stayed clean.

Then he would have just been at a huge disadvantage. Do you honestly think any of the MLB baseball players hitting all those home runs are all natural? That's kind of like saying, if you plan on going to the IFBB pro bodybuilding competitions, don't take steroids because you can get there without them. Then you're going to be performing (naturally) against guys training just as hard as you with anabolic assistance.

I honestly don't believe many MLB players with equivalent reputations at all were all-natural. I do believe Henry Aaron was natural, I believe Babe Ruth may have been, but let's keep in mind Aaron is known for his all-time +700 home runs and Babe Ruth is mainly known for breaking a record at hitting 60 home runs. I won't point my finger at anybody, but I wouldn't bet $ that Ken Griffy Jr, Sammy Sosa, and those other guys competing against Mark was all-natural. Same thing with A-Rod, he's already been busted with them.

If two guys were in a fight, one of them used a baseball bat against the other that refused to use a weapon, it'd be cheating. If both guys had a baseball bat, they're both guilty, but one is no more guilty than the other.

The way you describe it is, I'm sure, the reality of the whole mess.  Baseball has gotten pretty strict about steroids haven't they?  Is it still as dirty as it was in the recent past, or is it getting cleaned up significantly?

Football probably doesn't test at all, do they?

What about basketball?  That seems like a sport that might not benefit as much from steroids.  But I could be wrong.

to say steroids are being cleaned out of sports is the same as saying highschool kids are refraining from having sex.. uuuuuh..yea right...

As far as Basketball players or any other sport.. I can't really think of a sport that the athlete wouldn't benefit from taking anabolics.. aside from table tennis maybe... speaking of which.. anyone seen balls of fury... ?    I love watching the littel fat guy pretend he's on stage as a singer.. he rocks.. LOL

But to reiterate my point.. No steroid is going to make an average joe or even an above average joe a sports superstar..

Correct, there is no dispute about him being a great player and talented. However, what im trying to say is players use them to enhance their own abilities. I mean I would never discredit him for hitting those HR's, its an amazing accomplishment indeed. But because he did take something and enhanced his own skills, odds are that played a pretty big role during his season.

When it comes down to it you cant prove one way or the other...but my analysis would be it clearly helped him get to 70, I dont think he could have done that without them.

Steroids are NOT going to make you a super star, no question. But i mean, they run rampant everywhere in many sports. The advantages are there, players are using them to enhance their own athleticism and abilities they already had.

Off-topic, but McGuire hit 70 home runs and Bonds hit 73.

N$ you do have a good point, it may have influenced his strength so influencing his ability to hit 73. But I believe what smoundzou was saying is he was a good baseball player because of talent, not steroids. People are trying to completely discredit him due to steroids, without knowing that to hit 70 home runs in 1 season with or without them is a phenomenal accomplishment and he and others deserve respect.
