wake up and run - Saturday, July 18, 2009 11:00 PM ( #1 )
I've heard doing cardio right when you wake up (empty stomach) is a great way to burn the fat.  I've been doing it for the past week and hope to be in pretty good shape come mid september if I keep it up.  All I take in the morning is one caffeine pill (200mg).  Since I watch my son when I get up, I pretty much just jump around for 20-25 minutes.  I might try the guerilla cardio program, I'm not sure yet.  Anyone else trying this method?  Anyone come up with good results?

Morning is a freat time for fat burning becasue the glycogen stores are burnt up from the overnight fast.  You could do a bodyweight workout too for a good fat burner.

Another good benefit to an early morning run is that you feel charged up all day, at least I do, and tend to sleep better at night.

I'm not sure if HIIT is a great idea for fasted cardio, I'm sure people get results with fasted HIIT but it doesn't seem ideal when you haven't eaten, there is only so much fat that the body has access too. I'm going to be doing fasted cardio for six days a week, on top of my normal training, only at a 9:00 - 10:00 pace, anything faster seems like a bad idea to me.

A theory I hear floating around that I'm going to be testing along side fasted cardio. The idea is that if you eat a little bit of fat before morning cardio, the body looks for more energy similar to what it just burnt up, be it fat, or protein, whichever you had. I don't think there are any studies or scienece around it but its food for thought.

I think fasted cardio is overrated.  I always achieve a higher intensity if I've eaten.  Higher intensity = more calories burned.  For me it's a no-brainer.  Plus, cardio while my body is already catabolic...?  Ufff, rather not if I can help it.

HIIT is fine in the mornings, people do it after their workouts and glycogen levels are low too.

*snatch, you have more intensity because your being fueled by carbs. The whole point of cardio on low glycogen is to get to your fat storage faster. So you may have to push yourself harder while running with low glycogen levels, but its a sacrifice you should be willing to take.

this is purely for fat lose, obviously for some athletic event for example u want to carb up for the energy.

Yeah, that's what I don't quite understand:  Your body burns glycogen (carbs) first no matter what, right?  Then if you're in an aerobic state (high heart rate, high respiration=high oxygen consumption) your body chooses to burn fat rather than muscle?  If you're aerobic does muscle get burned as well?  If you're anaerobic (strength training?) once you blow through the glycogen your body catabolizes muscle?  Can someone please straighten me out?  If you've got a lot of muscle mass, metabolism goes up and maintaning that mass and repairing damage uses a lot of energy (calories) including fat(?) or is it just that there are never any extra calories to get stored as fat?  I'm so confused!  :(

I understand the concept, I just think the benefits are exaggerated.  My daily calorie (and carb) consumption is gonna be the same whether I eat breakfast first or not.  But in the end I'll burn more calories since I was properly fueled for a good cardio session.

Plus, I'm not convinced that my glycogen stores are completely depleted from just one night of sleep.  You're not gonna cut straight to your fat storage whether you have a bite to eat or not.

Would this not give credence to sex before getting out of bed in the morning being a beautiful thang?  ;)  Glycogen depleted, check!  Heart rate up, check!  Bngo:  fat loss!

Sure, if your girl wants a second opinion on that, YES you must have more morning sex to keep your man in shape.

Not entirely. Your aerobic system relies on glucose/glycogen and fat to form ATP.

Your anaerobic system relies on glucose alone, when it runs out of that it uses creatine phosphate.

Well muscle grows when you're sleeping right?  First one "muscle" grows, then the rest do!  Perfect!  ;)
Of course if you have a job, you're not going to make it to work on time.  Small price.  And then you'll have even more free mornings for more toe curling HIIT.

Getting back on topic for a sec!...  Here's an interesting article that discusses some pros and cons of HIIT-vs-LISS and fasted-vs-fed cardio.  Be sure to read thru to page 3.

Running as soon as you wake up is usually recommended. This really is beneficial if you're gearing for fat loss. You can also explore HIIT apart from guerilla cardio.
