Depends on a number of things- Is your diet geared towards muscle gain, are the dumbbells heavy enough to challenge each muscle group to grow, do you have a bench for performing different exercises...
Barbell work can definitely put a lot of muscle on you. When both arms work together to move a weight, more weight can be moved- More muscle gets involved. More weight moved, more muscle involved, more muscle growth.

in one word, yes.

you can do some great workouts with just dumbbells, and they are even better than a barbell at times.

just ensure that you use enough weight

id agree, squats and deadlifts would be difficult with just dumbbells. you could improvise a bit, but this probably wouldnt have the same effect as if you got yourself a barbell.

the military presses and bench presses shouldnt be too difficult however

you can have mass gain with any weight.
