useless training? - Thursday, January 04, 2007 5:29 PM ( #1 )
sry for all the posts lately in this thread but i've never really trained just for strength b4 so im just trying to clarify some things. most of my questions ive had have been answered but the only thing im still wondering is..im currently cutting so will this stop my strength routine from working? i know that i will of course get slower results than if i were bulking but is it just a waste of time or can i still see some increases in strength? and since im pretty much new to training just for strength except for the last 4 weeks would my body maybe be able to make gains b/c it hasnt had alot of time previously to adapt to strength routines?

There's an old chinese proverb "when you reach for both the moon and the earth at the same time, you get neither."  This is true with your goals in strength training.  I understand you are cutting for wrestling, so during what most people concider the off season, or bulking season, you have to cut weight.  Then along comes spring and summer, and you want to walk around with 6 pack abs, you don't want to be bulking up.  What it comes down to is how much of a commitment you have to fashion and your image (cutting), and how much of a commitment you have towards your strength training goals.  You can achieve both, but you can't do both at the same time.  Most people like to bulk up then cut down.  Maybe this will work for you.  Pick the goal you want more and go for it, leave the other one for later, you can always come back to it when it's more of a priority.

well i already knew that having 2 opposing goals at same time thing is bad but i didnt mean trying to bulk and cut at the same time. what i meant is is it possible for me to make good strength gains while cutting, not muscle gains. i know its hard if not impossible for ppl to gain muscle while lose fat but is it the same for gaining strength while losing fat b/c thats what im aiming for. anyway wat do u think about just that b/c ive seen my strength rise during previous fat loss cycles but that was with the normal 6-15 rep range and with the strength training i'd be doing like 5x5.

Ok, here's the facts:

1.  Fat loss is caused by caloric defecit in the body.

2.  To gain muscle (strength, mass, ect.) you need a surplus of calories in your body (among other things).

3.  Initial gains in strength or muscle mass can be explained by increased muscle efficency or increased glycogen stores and are not necessarilly an indication of muscle gains.

The first two seem to be in conflict with each other.  Since you can't have both at the same time, it seems clear that you would want to choose one over the other, because the middle ground between the two clearly accomplishes none of your goals.

I'm kinda tossing up between doing one of two routines.

1. Monday - Bulk, Tuesday - 500 calorie deficit, Wednesday - Bulk, Thursday - 500 Calorie Deficit, Friday - Bulk, Saturday and Sunday - 500 Calorie Deficits.

2. Monday - Bulk, Tuesday - Bulk, Wednesday - Bulk, Thursday - Bulk, Friday - Calorie Deficit, Saturday - Calorie Deficit, Sunday - Calorie Deficit.

With 3/4 of my bulk days on 2 being weight training days.

I'm mostly likely gonna make the switch from 1 to 2 as Veggeep suggested me too.
You reckon that'd work well? I wanna bulk and shred bodyfat consecutively.

I'm paranoid about that proverb. :p lol

I'd like to have a wife and not have to listen to someone ****at the same time.  Much like your goal of bulking and shredding fat at the same time, my goal has no chance of seeing the light of day.

Intriguing response, I'll do some consulting and take that into consideration!
