I'm already an actor, now I just gotta take the right steps into becoming a successful one.

Acting is one of the hardest professions in the world and I am proud to have so much experience in that field.
Which is also why I have so much respect for Heath Ledger, he died because of the role of the Joker.
Cast and crew apparently said he took the role too far - he locked himself in a room for a month, and every time he'd be on set, he'd reply in character and wouldn't respond to anyone who called him by his name. THAT'S dedication. Not to mention he died for the role.

Sorry for hijacking the thread... lol

That's not dedication.. that's method acting, and method acting is retarded as ****. You don't need to absorb a role to become something. Roles come and go. Acting is a job, and wether you're pasisonate about it or not, at the end of the day, you're no longer your character. The idea of him dying over his job is really stupid and nobody should aspire to follow that level of idiocy.

If you want to be a good actor, ACT. Don't "become".

lol, i love you wyrms, but miss duchess here has a very large pot of truth gold in her hands.

My dream job would be a researcher in experimental biochemistry, luckily ive been given an offer as summer experience to work as an intern for some hands on science experience, and thanks to my grades and the fact only my year in my uni has been given the opportunity, that puts me pretty nicely in favour of the job.

Nice pay too.

I completely disagree.

Method acting is the key to every actor's success.
In every acting class, lecture and workshop I've attended, the one thing all of the professionals advise is for you to BECOME the character, dive into that realm, out of your own ego and into theirs.

There's a certain feeling you get as an actor when you walk in the shoes of the character you're acting, it sends a euphoric chill down your spine, because suddenly you're not yourself anymore and that new exciting feeling is just...mind-boggling.

It can be taken too far definitely, but don't you dare refer to Stanislavski's techniques of method acting which have risen the very best of actors for decades as 'stupid'.

Hoo boy, we're gonna be disagreeing quite a bit here. I'm an actor too, and I come from the school of training where method acting is considered a deterrent and a bad habit.

Method acting requires way too much dependance on disassociating yourself from reality, whereas good actors don't need to do that because they're good at... "acting". Good actors don't need to become their character, because they can study them well enough to know how they work. Good actors simply act like their characters, and when the cameras stop rolling, or the play is over, they can be themselves. Good actors act. That's what acting is.

Heath Ledger was not a hero. Dying for a role is stupid. When the movie is over, it's over. People will be entertained, but that's it. He didn't save the anyone's life, he didn't discover a cure for cancer. He got so involved in the bad habit of method acting that he died. I doubt his daughter will think that playing a villain for a comic book movie was worth losing her father.

It's like the story one of my teachers told me, a long time ago...

Two men are on the set of a film. One of them is running around in circles, getting sweaty, hot, and tired. The other man stops him.

"What are you doing, son?"
"Oh, well I'm running around for an hour so I can feel all of the anxiety that my character feels. It's the best way for me to become my character."
"I see.. have you tried acting?"

I might have been reading BS on the internet, but i thought heath died of a cocaine overdose?

....Does the Joker snort the white stuff?

EDIT:Prescription meds, must be thinking of another famous pop clogger from the white stuff, easy mistake, most famous people go out that way

Also, he gets into the character as best as he can?

Im hoping his death has happened long enough ago that this doesnt appear distasteful, but...Ouch brokeback mountain must have been one hell of a job for him. Smile

Definition of acting

  • the performance of a part or role in a drama
  • acting(a): serving temporarily especially as a substitute; "the acting president"

    Definition of "emulating"

  • ambition to equal or excel
  • (computer science) technique of one machine obtaining the same results as another
  • effort to equal or surpass another
    wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

  • Emulation refers to the ability of a program or device to imitate another program or device. Many printers, for example, are designed to emulate Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printers because so much software is written for HP printers. ...
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emulation

  • one of the most frequent features accompanying competition, where customs, buildings, and artifacts in one society may be adopted by neighboring ones through a process of imitation which is often competitive in nature.
    www.china.org.cn/english/features/Archaeology/98851.htm

  • The process by which a device is built to work like another. For example, a chip can be designed to emulate another model and execute software that was written to run in the other design. The emulator can be hardware, software or both.

    Acting is Acting

    Method Acting is Emulation

In any case I'm going into my dream job: Game Development. Maybe I'll give you a buzz Duchess if we need a concept designer one day.
