unique question - Tuesday, October 17, 2006 3:53 PM
this could be a very unique question, but please answer, thanks.

i lift weights in a gym that used to be an old school building and its very small only 2 or 3 ppl lift there a day.  theres a weight trainer there though and hes old and also buff and he DOES NOT LIKE ME AT ALL, whenever i come in there he gives me an evil look.  one time i came in there and he said they were closed, i went back up the road and seen people in the driveway, peeked through the window and people were in there lifting weights.

anyway to the point i used to go there with one of my friends and he chickened out on me and wont go there anymore so now i dont wanna go there because i dont wanna go by myself, any advice of what to do about this?  another thing is im not big but im not small and when i go in there theres HUGE guys there.  anyone have any advice im really really shy so what should i do about this?  i dont wanna go by myself but weight lifting is everything to me and i really really wanna get big.  thanks you all.

why doesnt he like you???? if its just cause hes a d*** dont worry about it and lift. As for the big guys there the like when people are in there trying their hardest. dont get discouraged. Sometimes the biggest guys in the gym are the nicest.

What's the deal with the gym? Are you a paying member, is it some sort of community gym, or what?
this is exactly why I hate gyms. Sometimes, you can run into some serious attitude there- People who decided to get big just so they can feel good about intimidating others. I've been in gyms before where I get the stares, etc- I can ignore them and deal with it, but I'm not there to deal with clowns and stoke their egos- I'm there to lift. That's why I've always worked out at home or on the job- I just can't be bothered with that crap. That, and all sorts of other stuff- The know it alls, the strutters, etc- The gym is not for me.
But if that's really the only place you can lift, you don't really have a choice- Walk in there, don't even look to see if he's staring you down, and get your job done. Then get out. It's not the place to make friends- Although it's always cool if you can do that- But if this guy's obviously got something against you, take him out of your picture before you even walk in the door. If he's pulling crap like telling you the place is closed when it really isn't, that's an issue for management, or whoever's running the gym- Especially if you're paying a fee to get in.
It's fine to be shy- It'd be very easy for anyone here to tell you to grab your balls and piss right on this guy's stomach while he's benching, but if you're shy, you're shy- Just get in there and be shy while you're working out, that's all.
If you've got a right to be there, then find out what the actual gym hours are from whoever runs the place. Find out how much clout this trainer actually has- Ask what time they close, and if the time doesn't add up with what the other guy told you, ask about that too- "The other week, I came by at whatever time and was told the gym was closed- Is that a private session I can get in on", or "Is there any way I can get some sets in away from the private group that was scheduled that night?"
That way, you're not coming right out to management with a complaint about the guy, you're just asking about your access to the gym in general. See what they say. Whatever you do, don't let something like this stop you from training- This guy sounds like an ass, and you shouldn't leave any time in your life for someone like that to interfere with.

yeah thanks.  me and my friend walked in there today and right in the middle of us lifting he said im closing.  its a free gym you just walk in and lift weights, yeah he does private sessions and trains people i think me and my friend are the only people he doesnt train.  maybe if we ask him to train us hed be a little nicer?  plus, we could use the advice and tips.  all the guys hes trained or is currently training looks like hercules lol.  but no he is over the gym completly, thats the problem.

Huge guys, small guys, who cares bud. I've experienced working out at gold's and I can tell you out of all gyms I've experience that's the only gym that has worse atmosphere. But that didn't hold me back I still went in, mind my own buisness and worked out. They can't do anything, and if they did report them to the manager. If there buddies with the manager and nothing was being handled then report it to the police. Everybody has a purpose to go to the gym wheter it's to get big, get fit, healthy and everyone there should be treated equally.
