na in some instances you really need gloves. i never ever needed gloves before this year, i hate them too but i use them now because of my dry skin. i have incredibly dry skin and dry hands so my hands turn chalky by themselves and my callouses get so bad they tend to crack at the edges...crack very deep into the skin. so now i use them, but only in the winter time and only for days where heavy grip is needed(ie. arms, back)

you know what i hate, is those people who worry so much about everyone else in the gym.  who cares if someone is wearing gloves?  it has nothing to do with you or the weights you are lifting so just get over it and lift

So true! It may not be as bad as the posers I've seen wearing their rock-climbing harnesses at the 7-Eleven convenience store outside Great Falls park (we're talking FOUR MILES from the rocks, people) so everyone will know they're into rock climbing.

I keep things skin-to-iron until the caluses start to interfere with my sex life, Ha ha ha ha

I've always worn gloves and used straps.  I used to use chalk but then I got out of it.  Now that I've been completely seduced by the Dark Side and become a powerlifter, it's chalk all the way.  Sure I can deadlift more using straps, but they are not legal in competition.  And if I ever want to compete someday, I want to be trained and ready for it.

You know what?  Some gyms, like mine, do not allow chalk.  And that's a good thing, considering what slobs a lot of the guys are when it comes to putting away their equipment, unracking their plates . . .

Pay attention to what you're doing.  Who cares who wears gloves?  It's not hurting you, and it's none of your business.

One of my long-dormant synapses just fired... Come to think of it, there were at least three guys in my high school who used to wear their lifting gloves all day. What a bunch of whack, "Look at me, I'm taking weightlifting" douchbags, HA HA HA HA. I wonder if that ever worked to their benefit?

Imma chalk-to-iron kinda guy myself. I use wrist straps when I do work that involves more grip strength then I have. Its not that bad to wear to straps if it'l give u more weight to lift.

I have only used gloves for 1 week when I tore a calis off each hand and I wanted them to heal.

i need gloves since i hit deadlifts for back. The bars at my gym are like brand new and have a very rough texture for grip. When i'm done with a set, my hands have white spots and they sting horribly

Theres nothing wrong with gloves.  I use gloves with some of my lifts and it helps.  Like on the hex bar and stuff.  The only bad part about gloves is your hands sweat a little more which isn't a big deal.

All the people i lift with seem to like them and always ask where i got them.  Wearing the gloves all day.....  thats a bit weird.  ( what idiots).....lol

I do wanna get a pair of these Harbinger Big Grip wrist strap gloves.  These are suppose to be top of the line and the best Weightlifting glove on the market.  Very sweet.

I own 2 pairs of these Harbinger Training Grip wristwraps and they are excellent. They are one notch below the Big Grip listed above, but they are very good gloves.  Very paded, and comfortable and well made.  I can't train without them, we can't use chalk at my gym, plus the texture of some of the bars will really get your hands tore up.  I don't care what anybody thinks, I am lifting more weight than 75% of the People at my gym, if they don't like my gloves oh well!! Tough titty.  They will get over it.  I am not there to impress anybody and the gym is the last place I would even care. It's all about you at the gym, not what the next guy is wearing.

Example of when it's not rediculous to be wearing gloves. Try to have barely over 6 inch wrists and deadlifting 3-rep sets. I can't do it, I lose the grip at the top.

Also, I do use gloves when im benching, Because I cant take the chance of it slipping and me losing concentration.

You can call me a pussy or anything you'd like, but I love my gloves.

I only use gloves on my arm days, but that's because my hands are torn to hell, and bleed on the bars if i dont.  I'll stop wearing them once my hands heal up though... in HS football we were told that gloves were for pussies, something that i still agree with; but for now i'm a pussy so that i can grip the bar.

Hmm, arm-day gloves? I see some of the guys that are aout 42, skinny as hell, bad form, bad routine, and they wear them to do every exercise. I had a neighbor, till I moved (still keep in touch with the guy, good friend of mine) and he wanted soft hands, wore gloves doing every exercise, said the roughness was really unnatractive to him, so each his own.

if you are worried about what other people in your gym are doing you need to get over yourself and get back to lifting, I don't even talk to anyone when I'm in the gym, no reason to I'm there to lift, just play my music and get my workout done, its a gym not a social club

I say, if you want to wear gloves - WEAR THEM! Screw what anyone else thinks or says!

Me personally... I really don't like wearing them but I'll do it if I need to. For example, I have a place where I lift weights - it's a place that is damn cold in the winter and damn hot in the summer. What can you do?... anyhow, in January, just holding onto a bar for an extended period of time you'll end up getting frostbite! It's at this point I put the gloves on, do my workout, and then I'm done.

And again, like someone else said - some gyms don't let you use chalk, and some of these geekoids are too lazy to wipe off sweat and whatnot off the bar - use your gloves!!

I used to hate wearing gloves until my hands got all dried up and started to crack everywhere. I even thought that was ok until I thought about those rough cracked up hands touching a girl and how they would hate that. Now I wear gloves all the time.  And you know what. My hands are still dried and all cracked up. I still spend my time picking at my callouses. I'll still wear my gloves in hopes things will get better. As for the grip, I try to find football gloves with the nice grips. I hate the weightlifting gloves with all that padding.

We had this problem all the time in the lab using latex gloves for extended periods of time, usually during the winter.  What worked for us was slathering up our hands with the greasiest moisturizer we could find, such as Eucerin (in the tubs), and then donning the gloves.  It felt a little weird, but we got used to it, and between the heat of our hands and the enclosed, moist space, the moisturizer seemed to be driven into our skin.

This won't work so well with lifting gloves because the moisturizer will gunk them up, but maybe if you wore disposable latex gloves underneath (from e.g., Walgreens), this could help.  After your hands heal, you might not have to do it any more.  I imagine your grip would feel pretty funky at first . . .

I'd rather do without them not because of fashion neccesarily but because I cant feel the bar when I have them on...and my grip actually worsens, and when my grip worsens im in a world of hurt.

You know, i'm torn between both sides...

I used to wear gloves all the time, except for legs lol :p as i didn't like getting callouses. But then my hands got used to it. For the next 3 months i'm using a gym that doesn't allow chalk, which in my opinion is rubbish....but it is quite a posh place (student deal).

Because its posh the place is full of idiots who literally have very little clue of what they are doing...now when i'm in the gym, i too talk to no-one, other than to check if equipment is free or i need a spot...

But when im warming down...jeez...

My worst pet hate is people who wear fashion trainers to run...bad for ankles...and then there are people who train in their club kits, top to bottom...makes me wonder...and then there are the guys in the weights room...vests, beer guts, and trousers becuse they never train their legs and they are scrawny...

I hate the way the gym has become a fashion parade where i go...can't wait to change gym in 3 months (i have to wait that long til my contract runs out). I went to a proper bodybuilding gym once, and i scared myself into lifting PB's :p gotta join there i think, only fair....

Yeah I really dont care if people use gloves, I mean whats worse, gloves, or 70 year old naked ballsacks all over in the lockers? The people who really bug the hell out of me are the ****s who shadow box the ENTIRE time they are there, usually in the mirror. Or the guys who wear the nicest shirts and jewelery to the gym. But the worst are the guys who just ****ing talk, non stop, about the stupidest **** while they hog benches and dont even workout. Its time to workout, not 20 minute story time!!
