traps question
-
Thursday, September 04, 2008 5:00 PM
Hi all.$0$0$0$0I use dumbbell shugs and upright barbbell rows to train my traps. I'm still fairly new at this (about two months), and my problem here is that with dumbbell shrugs, my hands give out before my traps do. I use the heaviest dumbbells in my gym, and can barely hold them to get through 10 reps, if that. $0$0$0$0$0I don't know any better exercises for traps than shrugs, but I can't achieve failure on the exercise because I have to put the dumbbells down before I drop them.$0$0$0$0$0The best idea I have so far is, obviously, to train my forearms and grip strength until it doesn't happen anymore. And of course I am training my forearms, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Tricks I haven't thought of? Other exercises I don't know about?$0$0$0$0$0All advice and suggestions appreciated.$0$0$0$0$0Thanks.$0 $0

Deathmonkey, I have the same issue too when I do my dumbell shrugs. To help me out, I make it a conscientious effort to work my forearm/grip strength on my chest days by doing forearm curls, grippers, etc.. Also, I invested in a set of weightlifting hooks that strap around your wrist, and have metal hooks that sit against your palms. I ONLY use those when I do DB shrugs, and not for any other exercise. But keep in mind that using the hooks should not be a replacement for doing forearm/grip strength exercises! I too do heavy weights for my DB shrugs; and want to work out my TRAPS as hard as I can while doing so. These are the ones I use:
