too much vitamin and minerals?? How about the cholesterol? - Wednesday, April 22, 2009 6:47 AM ( #1 )
Ive been tracking my food on fitday and have been careful to get proper vitamin info as well. Without a mulitvitamine, I get a lot of the needed vitamins, but when I add a multi, I get over the amount on many items. Is that a problem? I am including a breakdown of one of the days so you will see what I mean. The last value is the percentage of the RDA that I get after the multi.

Also, about the cholesterol. I had high cholesterol for years but it was only mild. When I ate a bad diet and did not exercise I was at 280 total with too much bad stuff. Now its much better. Will see results of my latest test in a few weeks. Is the amount I am eating considered low, normal or high for a person that needs to watch their cholesterol?

Probably high, but to my knowledge at least, dietary cholestrol has little to do with your body's cholestrol (I think it was a 20% relationship), and even then, animal fats/cholestrol has benefits.

Your body being high in cholestrol just means that your body has a demand for cholestrol (which fuels all hormones).
It's not the fact that cholestrol is there and high that's the problem, the question is, 'Why does my body require so much cholestrol to function?'

Usually the first two things which cholestrol is converted into is Corticosteroids (Stress hormones) and DHEAs (Sex Hormones), stress hormones being the priority of course. Stress is huge in the world today and it seems that as we get older we get more stressed, not just psychologically but physiologically as well, our body fights everyday to fight all the toxins and crap that we're constantly exposed to (in our atmosphere and in what we consume).

258 isn't high body cholestrol, even for your age, I wouldn't take a doctor's word on it either. But if you wanna lower it, never go on cholestrol-lowering drugs. Just investigate into alternative stressors for the body.

If anyone disagrees or has more knowledge on the matter, I'm very open for discussion. =]

If someone responds with something c0cky and argumentative though, don't expect me to waste my time.

Aside from what Wyrms said, cholesterol is also used by your body to fix any problems with your cardiovascular system.  High cholesterol doesn't cause heart problems or cardiovascular disease, heart problems and cardiovascular disease cause high cholesterol.

I second that. Best way to put it, nice, simple and to the point. Cheers. :)

Just got the test results. Total cholesterol at 270. HDL is quite high. LDL is high too though. That makes it not so bad, but still not great. Going to have to try and lower the bad some.  Im really going to have to pay attention to the diet though. Any suggestions?

Most multivitamins give you more than the RDA. Most are excreted because they cannot be stored by the body or they won't harm you if stored ( vitamins A,D). There are a few you have to watch out for thought. I think Zinc, Iron and Magnesium have toxic effects. You are not really high over those so I wouldn't worry. I always found fitdays vitamin analysis a little screwy.

Selenium also has toxic effects at higher doses.  I don't know how high a dose is toxic though.
