Muscles involved chest, triceps, shoulders, abs, legs, and back.

So if you want the max results in your punch power exercise all of your body.

I will tell you the main things you should do...

Bench press, wieghted twisting crunchs, and squats or leg press.

aslo work on actually punching a punching bag or speed bag.

Exactly. Any good boxer will tell you that a punch starts in the feet, and moves through the whole body before you hit the target. Tons of power is taken from the hips. You want as much strength and power behind your fist as possible, and when you rely on just your arm, you're not relying on much no matter how big you might be. But lifting weights will only get you so far- When you're lifting, you're teaching your muscles to move heavy amounts of weight- Punching someone really isn't the same thing. When you practice punching, you should be concentrating on teaching your muscles to act explosively together to strike a target- Those two types of training put together will get you the most powerful punch. Either one by itself will only get you so far.

Thats funny cpl, i'm a martial arts instructor and have heard/learned/taught that your power comes from your hips. Then again, Martial Artist and Boxers are two different types of fighters. I'm not saying your wrong, I actually agree with you. It just depends on how you fight I guess. Anyways, from they way I have been taught, and I can definatly tell a diffence in kicks, is it comes from your hips. Think of it kind of like a rubber band car. You wind it up and let it go, but yet its still controlled. When I kick (once you are advanced you dont have to do it this way, it wont even look like your doing it but you are and you wont realize it) say for a roundhouse we dont let our rear leg (the one thats kicking) off the floor untill our rear shoulder is pointing towards our target. You then get a lot more power into it because you are using your body more. I know that sounds goofy but when you become more advanced you dont do it to the extreme, we just teach it like that to get it in your system. Anyways, punching is similar, but kind of opposite. Say your punching with yoru right arm, bring your left shoulders side facing the target, then with yrou hips pull it back and release the punch. Id say none of this makes sense. It would either have to be shown, or someone better explain it. Ive never had to write it down. But it actually does work, and in time after practice, it will be instant you wont move your shoulders, its all just to get your hips in the swing of things. If that makes any sense

The from your punch and/or kicks comes from your midsection. Your abs, sides, lower back, and hips control every movement of your body.

it actually depends on the type of punch as well.

I'd disagree that jabs and such come from anything but your chest, triceps, shoulders etc. Those quick, less powerful jabs are not from your hips or legs.

And CPL did say it comes from your hips, you missed it.

And lifting your whole body WILL help, because creasting stronger, denser muscles will only allow you to put more power into your punch, just remember you want to concentrate on strength and speed when lifting rather than size, because bigger muscles slow you down while denser muscles will not and if you gets tronge riwll help you punch stronger.

Last thing, it's mainly not even lifting anyway, I'd suggest punching a punching bag, a speed bag, sparring with people, just learning how to punch, move your feet and practice speed and power through actually PUNCHING. You only get so far with lifting weights. It takes practice with actually punching that will get you stronger and if anything, one strong punch isn't useful in boxing. You would rather be quick and able to get more than one punch in, surprise your opponent and dodge or block their punches as well.

Although you want to have a powerful punch, a lot more goes into boxing... someone with one strong punch will lose to a person who can easily dodge that punch because it's easy predict and then come in with a few nice combinations and be quick and get their opponent off guard.

Anywayz thats my advice on boxing, it's a fun sport... love it.

Hip movement definitely generates a lot of power for punches, kicks, whatever- But remember, in order to generate that movement, you have to be firmly rooted, and in order to keep proper balance, your feet, calves, knees, thighs, lower back- Hell, everything really- Has to come into play. You can swing your hips all you want, but without the other muscles doing their respective jobs, it means nothing.

i have a heavy 100lbs bag at home and i work out a fair bit but i get most of my punch power from working on the heavy bag 20-30 minutes of laying into a big 100lbs bag about 3 times a week while also working out chest abs and biceps will get you quite a bit of punching power fairly quickly.

thanx,

so basically all you guys are saying that for my punch power to increase my whole body has to get stronger, and that technic also helps a lot and that practicing in a bag helps right. i think i got it all. damn that is a lot of stuff. plus i have to ask you though, what muscke generates the most power. back, tricep or shoulder.

lol, you have no idea how much abs are used in a quick jab, even though it might not look like it.

and the thread topic was punch power. you need all those muscles to throw a powerful punch but if you had to pick one. Chests make Knock Out Punches

yes, i forgot abs... but i mainly was tryin to say in a quick jab you are hardly using lower body powers.

And yes, strong chest will be very effective for knocking someone out with your punch. You look at heavier boxers and fighters, they have very big chests. It is one of the main muscles used in the punching motion. Of course legs, hips, back, etc generate moment... but strong upper body, mainly chest triceps and shoulders will really help a LOT.

In general, you need to work out EVERYTHING and have great technique.

There is no disadvatange to working your whole body, for ANY sport... really everything is used in many sports and you will always want to train it all for best results. So train everything hard, don't just worry about what certain muscles are needs because it is almost always all of your muscles you will have to rely on.

I agree with all the statments you need good core strength but you must balance it.  For instance work you Abs Legs chest and shoulders etc but do not increase your weight too much.  The reason for this is the more weight you have in your arms the slower the punch will be.  Sure you may hit like an Ox but you may also get hit multiple times to your one hit and if your aponent is well balanced and has speed And Technique and Strenght in the right ammounts he would beat you down. :)
