tight lower back - Friday, September 05, 2008 7:45 AM
My lower back has been feeling very tight lately, especially after squats. Ive tried stretching by touching my toes, but it doesnt seem to help very much. What can i do?

It's normal to feel your back tight after squats, if it's a mild tightness it's ok

If it's something that aches then it's probably form

Get a vid (don't worry you don't have to post it here) so you can watch your form and see what you're doing wrong, you might be leaning forward too much or you might me rounding your lower back at the bottom position
Squat max - 245lbs
Bench max - 188lbs
Deadlift max - ¿?
Front Squats(atg)- 5x165lbs

The only reasons I can think is your form and a weak back.

Make sure you keep a good form and try working that lower back.

Feels great.

Don't try to touch your toes, that won't stretch your back in the slightest, it's a bit unnatural imo.

Just tense it up, or put yourself on the floor in a push-up position, push yourself up, maintain that and bend your back/push your pelvis to the ground a bit, and hold that for about 15-20 seconds, you should feel it in your abs and your back.

That's called a prone brace and is a good stretch and strengthening exercise.

Say strength wise i have a decently strong lower back, but i injured it slightly doing deads with bad form, could that cause the tightness?
