Lynx hit the nail on the head...
Tendonitis is caused when the casing of a tendon becomes inflamed (usually from repeated movements). Tendonitis, while it is a sharp pain, can be relived by stretching out the inflamed tendon. It will also hurt quite badly if you press on your inner forearm where it meets the bicep. This injury, while not major, if left untreated for long periods of time can result in tendon surgery.
Shin splints describe any pain between the ankel and knee. Its like saying I have a headache.
The cause of shin splints is usually overused muscle, either an acute injury or DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness). The muscle pain is caused by any activity that involves running or jumping. An individual not accustomed to running may experience pain in the shin muscles the next day even after a single, short bout of intense Running. There may even be immediate discomfort in the muscles from a build-up of lactic acid.
Shin pain may also be the result of connective tissue such as
periostitis, which is an inflammation of the periosteum. The pain may be caused by a stress fracture in the bone. Pain in the lower leg may also be referred from a distant area of the body, such as pressure on the
sciatic nerve near the hip joint. If a bone problem is suspected, a bone scan can be useful in confirming the diagnosis.
While I know that the pain is not in your legs, the same applies. Just Rest those muscule groups, use de-flamitory methods (Ice, rubs, ect) and see a doctor if problems persist.
