Hi, I work out every other day at a local gym. I do 2 set of 10 reps on each machine with 45 secs between each set. Then I do about 24 bicep curles and 24 shoulder shrugs each with 30 lbs. Im 18 and have been working out for about 2 years. I started this specific routine about 3 weeks ago. I just bought MuscleTech MesoTech off eBay and it has 14 packets of 52gprotein/340calories/24 carbs each. How many packets should I have a day? Im 145 lbs. Thank you. also, is there anything wrong with my routine? I do about a 2 min warmup run before starting. I also just got a 2 lb tub of MuscleTech Nitro-Tech with 110calories/20g protein/3g carbs in each scoop (32 scoops total). Thanks!

Average protein intake should be around 1.2-1.5grams of protein per lb of bodyweight. Try and get most of it via real foods. Supplement like 2-3 times daily. Maybe go light at first on the MRPs (meal replacements). If you aren' t working out intensley enough or frequently, you might gain unwanted weight. So be careful of that. Plus real food is thermogenic. Meaning it makes your body use calories to burn food. Supplement meals are broken down already and ready to go. So in essence, your body does barely any work to assimiliate the protein and such. Truthfully, if you are looking to get bigger, you will have to forget the high reps and such and just go heavy and hard. While some in this forum aren' t big fans of MAX-OT, it will at least teach you some basic moves and understanding the principals of growth. Heavy lifting. As it stands now, my opinion is your routine is primary for muscle maintance and general fitness. You are nowhere near the intensity and reps, sets and such that you would really need to get some growth. While your routine is probably fine for staying in the gym for a short amount of time and hitting all bodyparts, it' s not indusive to growth. Machines are well and fine but if you want bigger muscles, free weights are the way to go. Take a look at MAX-OT It really depends on your goals. And if your goal is just to be fit, maybe you are on the right track.

Yes, you need to revamp that workout. You also need to stop buying muscletech.

Thank you both for your quick replies. Should I supplement on days that I dont work out? zebra, when you say that the body does barely anything to assimilate the protein do you mean that the protein in supplements is worthless? Twin, what is the problem with Muscletech? What should I get?

Protein intake should be equaly high on lifting and non-lifting days. The problem with muscletech is they make very average products and charge premium prices -- mostly to cover their advertising budget.

when you say that the body does barely anything to assimilate the protein do you mean that the protein in supplements is worthless? Absolutely NOT. To clarify I just meant that let' s say you get 52g of protein from a steak. Your body has to work and burn more calories to break it down. So food is thermogenic so to speak. A supplement MRP.. 52g of protein.. it' s ready to be assimilated by your body now. No breakdown necessary. So your body doesn' t work as much (caloric) to take in the protein. And if you have more intake then output, and your body can' t use it.. you just end up storing it as you know what. Go easy on the MRPs.. I used to take 3 of them a day.. got fat.. started doing more REAL meals and using the MRP less.. like once a day. Same protein intake at the end of the day, but I lost the love handles. Does that make sense?

mostly to cover their advertising budget. Yeah.. love their " advertorial." You think you' re reading something informative in a muscle mag, only to find out that it' s just a 5 page sly ad.

zebra, one more question.. when you got fat, was it just your stomach or your whole body? b/c people look bigger when they get fat all over and work out, dont they? also, im going to canada for 3 weeks and wont be able to work out. i may be able to do some situps and pushups. should i still supplement? thanks!

Males usually gain weight around the mid-section first... and when I was taking 3 MRPs a day.. that' s where I gained it. Once I quit, the mid-section got under control again and I was back on track. If you are going to Canada for 3 weeks.. I would supplement lightly. Since your body won' t require the same amounts of protein and such, it would be unnecessary to take in 1.5g+ a day. However, you still do want to retain any muscle mass you do have, so supplement and maybe even take some glutamine. There' s a HUGE thread on it but some say that it will help retain muscle mass over an extended period of time. That is, if you want to spend the money and make the choice to do so based on that thread. It' s in the supplement section. Up top. Canada is beautiful! That sounds like a fun trip. I' m sure there are just body workouts that you would do to keep you in an overall good level of fitness while away from the gym.
