sugar or fat - Saturday, October 28, 2006 9:13 PM ( #1 )
what is more important to avoid when trying to lose bodyfat?
I have a debate going with my girlfriend because I drink sugar drinks and try to avoid
snacks but she says the drinks are just as bad as the desserts so i'm trying to see what is worst....the sugar from the drinks or the fat from the snacks...

im new so if this has been addressed, please bare with me!!
thanks

depends on the type of sugar and the type of fats you are eating....i mean their is fructose, glucose, sucrose, etc, and then saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated fats...so it really is dependent.

I am losing tons of weight cutting alot of sugar... not necessarily carbs but actually sugar carbs. I have a moderated fat diet, not alot, but I do drink a serving of muscle milk a day, eat a decent amount of red meat, and chicken..... Please don't take this as I am on a low carb diet, I have tons of carbs a day from oatmeal, to sweet potatoes.. just nothing with high amounts of sugar and worthless calories like some sugary goodness snacks...

Fat doesn't make you fat, an excess of calories does... but having to much sugar is a bad thing because your body will want to use it for energy and not burn any fat.... Whereas if eating when losing weight it is imperative to keep a good intake of fish oils and such.
Eat...Lift....Sleep......Repeat

Enjoy the process.. but crave the goal.

The answer is sugar is worse, in my opinion, considering the type your talking about.  There are good types of fat that should be part of your diet, whereas processed sugar in soda is absorbed very quickly into the bloodstream and makes you hypoglycemic.  This causes your insulin to spike to lower your blood sugar, so it turns the extra glucose in your blood into fat.

Furthermore, it will up the triglycerides in your blood which is significantly linked with heart disease.  I can't think of anywhere cola fits into a diet while fat certainly does.  Now that is not to say that if you cut soda, and pick up a bic mac, you are doing better.  That would certainly be worse, but as far as going for a subway sub with less than 6 grams of fat while having it on a white bread roll and downing a cola will basically negate any of the fat you cut out.
