After the workout. Definitly don't stretch in between sets, static stretches can temporarily decrease strength in the muscles by up to 10%
Goals by end of 2009: Bench 205 Squat 255 ATG Squat Clean 185 "There is no elevator to success, you must take the stairs."

connelly After the workout. Definitly don't stretch in between sets, static stretches can temporarily decrease strength in the muscles by up to 10% What he said. I wish I had known this earlier, my preworkout stretching is completely different, forgot the name but its like doing moving lunges and stuff. My flexibility is still good, just do the static stuff at the end or not even when lifting. And you really only need to do a lot of it if you are inflexible in certain areas, plus don't forget to hold atleast 30 seconds if you are working on improving flexibility.

Since when did stretching decrease strenght while working out !?!?!? Stretching is good while and after training. You just won't stretch as much while you train but it will NOT decrease your strenght.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

really nic? ive heard the opposite- and that goes for before training and during. And it was from this site that the information was given. I still warm up and stretch before workouts just due to my past injuries ive linked to not stretching.

I've heard pre workout warmup is crucial. 5 to 10 min of light cardio. Pre workout stretch is okay if you've warmed up (dangerous if you have not warmed up) but not necessary. Post workout stretch is more important than pre workout. I try to incorporate during-workout stretches in when I do warmup sets. As that set progresses I increase range of motion. The one thing I always stretch between sets are calves between calf-raise sets.

^^Ditto all that, including the calf stretching bit. I'm going with Jillian Michaels on this one (Sorry Nic but she is prettier than you): Stretching before a workout can indeed compromise muscle strength and is more likely to cause a tear or strain than if you just started blasting reps without stretching. Static stretching before a workout is B-A-D. On the other hand, you should definitely warm up the muscles and joints that you will be working with something light and aerobic in nature -a couple minutes on a stationary bike or eliptical and a dozen or so empty-handed lunges out to do the trick before squats. Use your imagination. The idea is to get the blood flowing. I don't have time for stretching between sets, as I'm usually too busy flexing the crap out of whatever I just blasted. Save the static stretching or PNF work for you cool-down.

stretching before working out most definatly does make you weaker. Just try it and find out for yourself.
working on explosive phase vertical: 35 weight: 206 Big 3: 300/440/515 Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle.

Every powerlifter I have ever talked to has said to never squat facing a mirror. And for people that don't know how far to go down, start box squatting till you do.

Thx guys, Is part of it also that you are supposed to look down a little as opposed to straight ahead looking at yourself in the mirror. Does looking forward, as I find myself doing, put strain on the neck? Thx!

Dynamic stretching before workout, static stretching afterwards, and foam rolling before bed makes for incredible flexibility. If you are stretching to increase range of motion and flexibility, you should be stretching every day. Perhaps even a few times a day.

You have to make sure you do a warmup first. Don't want to do the dynamic stretch on cold muscles, imo.

I get caught looking down when working out with others and i get yelled at.

I find I'm usually looking at my quads in the mirror to make sure I go to at least parellel or lower. My ass does this funny shift to the left a couple inches and then back to center on the way up on every rep. Concern?

Agreed on the dynamic stretching prior to working out and the static stretching at the end. The general idea is to not overdo it at the beginning or in between exercises. During my training I try to get a bit of a stretch between some sets as well as massage the muscles being worked. Take it from a guy who has had his share of injuries, warm up and stretching are very important as they will help you avoid injuries.
