speed traing hill question - Thursday, March 05, 2009 8:00 AM ( #1 )
Hey i have been trying to improve my speed , explosivness, and leg strength. I have been doing squats, plyometric training, and working my core. I want to add hills into my routine, my questions are:

1.)How many times a week should i run hills?(i lift three times a week full-body and evey other workout day i add in plyometrics)?
2.)Is it ok to squat and run hills on the same day?
3.) Has anyone done hills in addition to lifting, If so what were your results?

i used to run hills as part of sprint training, usually only once, or twice a week .. as for results i think that hills are a great anaerobic workout, really gets ur heart pumping, and great for strength and stamina, but as for speed and explosiveness, i dont think they would be a good option.. if you would really like to improve your speed i think stick with your plyometrics.. and run down a hill of about 15 degrees or less, this is great for leg speed, you just have to be really careful for injuries.. running hills is probably best when you do it every now and then sort of thing, just for something different

im planning to do my HIIT using slope training.
so if someone can give an intelligent answer to the question based on personal experience, it would be really helpful.

im not sure what sloping is.. but im guessing running down a slope?? i used to train on a rugby field, slope of about 5 degrees, training like this is great for speed in my opinion, after 6 weeks of this i noticed great improvements in leg speed, i have to say that running downhill is the best way to get fast, in a short amount of time

Be careful with hills. If you're running distances, know the route and the elevsation level before you go on it. If you know that two routes have large hills, dont do them one after another. Excessive hill work will destroy you calves, shins, ankles, knees.

Hills and squats on the same day. During football, we had max-outs and then 20 hills. Not a good idea anatomically and therefore, NOT necessary to life.

Lifting upper body and running hills: no problem.

I agree with PearlJammer. Its really about the degree of the hill. If its pretty steep then your gonna have to start being more careful with it, doing it less often. But maybe like a 15 degree hill would be ok. You will still definitely get the benefit from them. plyometrics will help you get faster, yes. Another thing you should see to do is: killing your hamstrings. A ton of strength and speed in running comes from your hamstrings. Go through the motions, you'll recognize it if you didn't know that. While working like a Leg Curl, You must work leg extensions. Those 2 lifts are supposed to be within like 20 lbs of each other give or take a little. Other hamstring exercises would be single leg curls and good mornings. I can't think of anything else right now. But also stay flexible. Less prone to injury and yes it will make you faster. What happens when muscles tighten up in the middle of a sprint, or race? hope I helped some
