That "someone" was right. Working your abdominal muscles (a relatively small muscle group without much fat-burning potential) in isolation is an ineffective means of burning the fat off your midection. The only way to bring out the "eight-pack" is through proper diet and total body fat-loss conditioning (aerobic exercise). That's not to say you shouldn't do the situps and/or crunches, because you still want to strengthen and enlarge those muscles.
Yes, that's me in my avatar, and NO, I don't look like that today. That was taken back in Jan '07, and I lost most of that progress when I slacked off last year. I'm on my way back, tho, and I'm using that photo for inspiration.

Crunches don't reduce fat, it strengthens your ab muscles. But, you won't able to see your ab muscles, thru a layer of fat. But, crunches are still good to do because you need strong abs to support your back.

basically keep doing the sit-ups and crunches and as soon as u lose all of the fat or most of it then'll you'll start to see the six or eight pack

Crunches are better for your abs and back but as far as losing fat you want to stick to eating healthy and some sort of cardio
