simple newbie question

Hi all I hear a lot that, to build mass, you should eat above your recommended calorie intake, rest lots and avoid cardio exercise. But if you're eating lots but not exercising, how do you avoid it going on your tummy as fat? I trained for about 6 months then eventually stopped through medical advice (false alarm - about to restart) and I went from slim and about 160 pounds to pretty well built and about 182 pounds. The cost of this is that I've put some on my tummy - I'm not fat, but I'd rather it wasn't there. Given the choice between the two states, I'd clearly stick with the latter - but how do people do it that they can eat lots, build the right areas and keep it off areas they don't want expanding :) Thanks a lot Andy

When people talk about bulking and eating excess calories it's assumed that you are also exercising. There's no point in eating extra calories if you aren't exercising because you will do what happened to you - put on fat.

Wow, news to me - I was definitely told by more than a few that, to build mass, you should avoid cardio. But it's odd; you eat, rest and train, and you put on mass. You then go running or play squash, and you lose mass. Isn't it a tug-of-war? How great it would be if cardio only took off the fattier areas, and training/eating/resting only put on the areas you wanted to build.

By exercise I don't mean cardio I mean weight lifting.

And you won't lose a lot of mass if you keep lifting while you're cutting and take bcaa's.

I did, I read the wiki page. None the wiser, didn't do a biology degree unfortunately. Do you know any links to guides that break this down with regards to why I need it etc, or perhaps you could run this past me? Not shy of Googling or researching, but since you know, and know my aims...
