shrugs

what is the best way to do shrugs? dumbells side, dumbells front, barbell in front, barbell behind i have been doing barbell behind and works good. started with dumbells but got to the 100lbs and did not have any bigger ones.

this is a good question. i also have the same problem with the dbells, my gym only goes to 120, but i feel i work my traps better with dbells than barbell shrugs. maybe i should invest in gettin myself heavier dumbells just for that purpose lol. cheap a** gym lol

I rarely do shrugs, and when I do, they're right after Deadlifts. I used to do them with the Barbell and a pronated grip (palm facing toward you) but I've found that Dumbbells are more convenient, placing the dumbbells at your sides so the weight at the end of the lever is consistent with the pressure used to pull it up. And don't ROLL your shoulders, just in case anyone was.

deadlifts will rip your traps up nicely. so will powercleans. throw in a lil overhead press, and if you HAVE to do shrugs... i enjoy throwing a nice amt of weight on the smith machine and doing BB smith shrugs with the bar in front of me. honestly though.. deads or cleans will cause lots of tension on your trapezius muscle. they'll grow.. trust me
