i know i have asked this question before, but i hear different things about it. so should all my sets be taken to failure or just my last set of a excercise. i want to gain mass so which way is the best. should i stop a few reps before failure on my first couple of sets or just go until i know i wont get the next rep. thanks!

built said it right...Tone yourself first, after you get toned up and feel like you can do more then try a couple times going until failure, just be prepared to feel exhausted...but thats a good thing.

I really dont understand your guys responses to his question. Not going to failure... How will that make you more toned? If you want to be toned go run on a treadmill. I don't see how him not taking his sets to failure will help him get more toned vs. him taking his sets to failure.

I started following the MAX-OT program from this forum about 3 weeks ago and its working very well for me.  I have been training since I was 18 now 33 but never really made any significant gains.  After reading the MAX-OT program it all made sense to me.  I used to do several sets adding more and more weight until failure.  Now I follow the MAX-OT program which says light sets to warm things up and then go heavy with failure.

I don’t know what you guys mean about toned.  You say you want to gain mass so this is how it’s done.  You need to overload your muscle which means failure.  Light sets for warm up and DO NOT over do these or you will be exhausted before you go heavy.  Then go heavy and fail rest and repeat.  Eat properly rest and enjoy.

If you need to know where to find the MX-OT program then just ask.

Let me/us know how you get on.

it all depends on how you define failure.  Watching someone do "forced reps with a spotter for 3-4 reps when they barely got the first 6 is not productive but see it all the time.  I train to  point of what might be called momentary muscle failure.  That point which one can not do another rep without a break in form.  Only exercise I ever use a spotter on is squats (if I go over 4 plates)and that is merely for safety reasons

i guess you could call it that
as i said i go until I can not complete a full rep in good form under my own control-rarely use a spotter or a forced rep

so being that im a beginner i should start off abit lighter?
im about 5'11-6'0 ,and 145 i have a goal to reach atleast 160 and up by the end of june and 180 by the end of the year. so im bulking and have been doing the heaviest i can , it is only my second week ,  i can feel my self getting abit stronger but no size diff yet , obviously too early , but i usually do as heavy as i can , first set i usually can get thru ten then second and third i can barely get  8 , sometimes , say im doing 3 exercises for one muscle , after one set i can only get thru 2- maybe 4 , someone said it was my breathing and i have been working on that  , anyway am i going about bulking the wrong way by starting off doing the heavy stuff?  it makes sense to maybe do a set with lighter **** to warm up , should i just do that and continue with the heavy weights?
