should i just quit and go lose some weight? - Wednesday, June 04, 2008 9:02 PM ( #1 )
Well my question was since im deffinetly overweight should i just stick to cardio and get all the blubber off my rump then jump into weighlifting. i read somwere its really hard to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time becuase you need more calories than you burn for building muscle and the oppostie for losing weight. im just thinking maybe if i start now and cut my calorie intake and do the truffle shuffle down the street maybe i would increase muscle mass faster in the long run being skinnier. I definetly need some help on this one

Discouraging isn't it!!
Ok, stay with both. Muscle burns calories..thats less unused calories to be stored as fat. Clean up your eating habits...It's hard to break away from sweets (sugars= bad carbs). Try getting Clif builder's bars. 20G of protein, try the chocolate mint, like a Girl scout Thin Mint cookie...helps at bad sugar craving times.
Sure, cardio takes away from muscle. But, don't stop the lifting. Try changing your cardio time to 12 hours after your lift times.
I work out at 2am when I come home from work, then do a 30 min cardio (run) at 12 noon. I have went from 320lbs (January) to 275lbs currently. I still maintain most muscle gains... January bench at 135lbs, current bench 240lbs. Just stay with it! It will happen! You didn't get all that weight overnight. It comes off the same way...slowly!!
Hang in there, Keep going, you can do it.......Keep us posted!

Dline, I was in the same positon as you when I started lifting. I was at the 30-33% mark but I didn't choose to give up lifting. Right now I'm down to 24-26% bf and guess what... I don't do any cardio. Just eat right and lift like a beast and you'll lose weight, gain muscle, and ultimately feel better.

ok I deffinetly will not stop lifting. im at the point were my weight is extremley holding me back in having fun in many situations with life. right now me and my dad are fighting for our garage space (mother is packrat) and trying to get a decent place to workout, its kina hard to bench when box's are hitting the bar and it lands on your chest (fun times). and as for cardio it just so happens my subdavision is exactly 1 mile around wooot :) no guessing games, now it's just time for me to take the initiave
lay off the mary jane and get my sleeping and eating habits back to normal. just so happens i do have access to boxes and boxes of pure protein bars (peanut butter) yum.

Well thanks guy and ill keep you posted.

Def dont stop lifting that will only hurt you in the long run, but do you run at all? I run twice a week and lift 3 times a week which balances me out pretty good
