i always get them really bad. Right now just from football conditioning nd playin alot of bball nd such. My friend said if i tape them up before activity it prevents them from gettin worse. Is that true? I tried it today nd it jus seems to make them hurt more. I mean i know its supposed to help somehow but idk maybe im doing it wrong i jus wraped bandage wrap real tight around them. Also...what else can i do about them. I ice them every night and have to take ibuprofen all the time for them nd im basically gettin worried about my ibuprofen intake. They really mess me up and i cant perform at my best because of the pain. these are like...ruining my life lol

lol don't cut off the circulation :P. I remember my high school trainer said to massage or rub them before and after excercise. Ice, rest and try to keep pressure off of it completely when you are resting I suppose. I've been having some shin pains as well lol, I've been doing HIIT with a friend down at a local football field, all out sprints are fun :D. Well, hope things get better. Good luck!

Stetching can't be emphasized enough. I'm sure you are doing this before you play, but don't overlook it and make sure you get a GOOD stretch before exercising. That helped me out when I used to get them from running.

Spend at least 5 minutes streching before you play and see if it makes a difference

supposively this helps get rid of shin splints. sit down in a chair, put a towel on the ground under your feet. place your feet at the bottom of the towel, and use your toes to pull the towel towards you. kinda like rolling it up. don't move your heels, just scrunch your toes in and out and move the towel until there's none left to pull with your toes. sounds stupid, but supposively it works and a couple of people i know said it did.

Yeah you need to strengthen the muscle in front of your leg. Splints are cause from your calves being worked and getting stronger, but the opposite muscle not being worked. So yes, using that towel method should help. Atleast I'm pretty sure that's how it works lol...

Splints also occur from running on hard surfaces without proper running footwear on. The force goes down when you run, if it doesn't spread out because the surface has a little give, the force goes straight back up through your leg.

The towel thing works also before and after do heel walks (just as it sounds) ice baths work well but aren't that much fun I do track and over half the jumpers i know are almost literally addicted to ibprofen and they seem ok but still : /

In attempts to get XC started early, I started too fast and have developed splints too. It sucks sooo bad. I most likely got them from overtraining, and running on concrete.(I didn't know any better) I've been on the stationary bike for about a week, and this is week 2 hoping they give way eventually. I do the silly dorsiflex exercises, but that's all I can do. For those who have had splints, how long was typical recovery?

I still get some pain about 2 years later. Only after I run a lot though, like after a game my shins and the tendon below my big toes will hurt.

I have probably googled Shin splints every which way possibel to find a solid article on their cause, and recovery. Among them all, this one seemed to be the easiest to read, most relatable, and has alot fo strengthening exercises for the little girly of a muscle in the shins. http://www.watfxc.com/TF/TF%20Education/shin_splints.htm

Good shoes also play a big part in shin splints. I get them too, and it's really annoying. Best thing to do is increase your cardio gradually, ice, compress, elevate. And take some extra calcium.
