safely lose muscle?
-

okay, bare with me lol. I always wanna be as light as I can but I cut down to ridiculously low bf%s and do keto to lose even more water weight and my weight is still waaay above the average persons and the only thing thats gonna make me any lighter is to get rid of some of this upper body muscle. Can you lose muscle without losing strength? Maybe if I got rid of all of the higher rep ranges and stopped stimulating my slower twitch fibers altogether I could keep my strength but lose some more weight is what I was thinking but it also seems like if Im keeping all of my strength, Im not gonna lose any weight...

Just ship all the unwanted muscle my way. I'll even pay shipping. ;) RS, why do you want to be lighter, even at the expense of muscle? Are you too heavy for the Oly lifting? I could see how having to get a lot of body mass moving and stopping quickly could be a problem.

No offense, but this is beyond retarded. In my opinion. It seems to me like you're not happy with yourself. And if that's the case at where you are at now, judging by your avatar and that progression post you made, then you'll never be happy with yourself. Also, why would you want to compare yourself to the average person?

Can you lose muscle without losing strength? I dont think that is even remotely possible. To lose muscle you have to put yourself in a state where your body will readily catabolize it, or simply stop working out. I think the most plausable would be to force your body to catabolize the muscle, but to get to that point with diet and other factors and cant even imagine you keeping the same strength. Its possible you could go on such a cut to perform he above scenario until you get down to the weight you want. By cutting your going to more readily burn muscle then fat especially if you do a big deficit. Then when you get down to whatever weight, simply raise the calories back up to your new maintenance level and build your strength back up without adding more mass... I could be wrong though, thats what makes the most sense to me with this question... I have no idea why you would want to do this...but to each their own.

Yeah dunno either, but my suggestion is just stick to the 1-3 rep range for main lifts and olympic lifts. You will probably lose some weight without assistance exercises if you are in a calorie deficit, but you will lose some strength too, but I think you could gain it back later and keep your weight down.

Also, why would you want to compare yourself to the average person? Im fine with myself lol. Ive been happy with where I am at for about 4 months now, I just want more relative strength. I wanna be quicker and I wanna be able to do all kinds of dunks and since Ive all but completely lost interest in bodybuilding, I think its a sacrifice Ill make. why compare myself to tha average person? I guess I shouldve compared to my old self. Without much lifting at all I was around 160-165. I dont know how much of my muscle is useless sarcoplasmic hypertrophy or w/e and how much is actually being used to force me upward but I bet Im only using around 180-190 lbs of it...

What's that Austin Powers dude called, some kind of man of mystery? That's you for me, RS! Remember I said I haven't "figured you out" yet? This is what I'm talking about! So the loss of muscle will allow you to jump higher, accelerate faster, or do Oly lifts more efficiently? Does that have anything to do with it? You may have alluded to that in your post.

can you just train for speed and agility while oly lifting? No need to lose the muscle. i guess this would begin to creep more on a sport specific training catagory regarding agility.

I think I understand what he wants to do... Be more efficient and powerful at a lower weight. Quite simply if he ways less, but can move more weight or the same weight at a lower body weight then he is more powerful by definition. Lower weight class, by definition he would be faster to go with the power. It sounds odd to me just as it does to any of you, but like I said. To each their own, I could see him dropping weight and if he is able to keep or up his strength at a lower body weight. I could easily see him dominate lifting comps/sports at a lower weight class with that strength.

Something worth checking out.... but only for info, not necessarily the route you should take, look into serious rock climbers training... they don't train for power or speed, but when they lift weights there is a definite emphasis, on keeping the pectorals small... They have strategy for it, as one of the rock climbers adages is lats like wings, and a chest like a squirrels...

All you have to do is wait until your over 70 years old. All you ask of happens naturally at that age.

Doesn't sound too drastic to me. I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem to gain it back if you wanted, just remember as you get older, hormones aren't going to be as beneficial as they are now.

Would rather lose fat than muscle bro. Muscle still plays a role in speed. What if you just go for lean muscles by adding in reps in your lifts? That will do the trick.

Muscle will only be lost if A) It's deprived of amino acids to use glucose B) Motor units go unused and are deactivated by the nervous system So I don't see how it's possible, I don't think I'd ever want to lose muscle though lol.
