Jello is made from animal fat, you know after you cook meat and put it in the fridge? That goo at the bottom is collogen from the fat, it lubricates your joints. That is what jello is made of.

Not to be too pedantic, but the annoying cook in me is screaming out...

Jello is actually made from gelatin, which is made by boiling (well, cooking -- it's usually not a full boil) collagen in water. Collagen, in turn, is a protein, not a fat, containted in the skin, bone, and connective tissue (tendons, ligaments, cartillage, etc).

RE: Knee pains (bulldog)

Glucosimine, flax oil, fish oil, and jello. If you don't like to eat it, drinkit. I had an ACL Reconstruction when I was 20. Now I am 28. I have a squat of 385x6, and ran 5 miles today. Squats are good, I just cant go as deep as some people do. I go about 90% to parralell.

RE: Knee pains (J)

Thanks I think I'll try that here at work

J

RE: Knee pains (fossils)

During the past weeks i get this suddent pain in my right knee while squatting. HEres what i do to relieve it stretch longer. Right before and after i do any leg exercise. I sit on a chair, hold my right leg up put one hand under your knee where your thigh closes and the other on the directly on the knew then just straigthen your leg out (as though your kicking in the air but not too high depending on how felxible you are, as long as you can straighten it pain free) with your hands holding your knee like a ball. Stretch it 10 times for each leg, usually gives them a good stretch and relieves pain.

RE: Knee pains (J)

Thanks guys for all of the help.

One of my biggest fears is too look like half the guys at my gym big up top with lil chicken legs =P.

I'll definately look into the shoes and try your leg press exercise tomorrow.

J

RE: Knee pains (Marc David)

You can find some cool gym shoes at

The Otomix Review

RE: Knee pains (Kris)

Glucosamine is a miracle supplement if you have joint pain.

I was in a motorcycle accident years ago and needed a new PCL put into my left knee. Needless to say my legs have never been the same and it took me a long time before I could start lifting heavy with my knees again. Definitely get the glucosamine.

Also, try to get some sort of walking shoe for the gym... it will put a little less stress on your knees then other shoes.

A great exercise for minimal stress on the knees is leg press. Place your feet higher then normal on the plate and give that a shot. Then do other free-weight exercises but do not use too much weight that causes pain. If doing squats with 45lbs is ok but 55lbs is uncomfortable, then do 45lb squats. Over time you will build your body up and be able to increase the weight.

RE: Knee pains (Marc David)

2-3 weeks before the glucosamine kicks in.

And they can do a scan of the knee so if it does persist and hurts.. you should have it checked out.

RE: Knee pains (J)

My leg workout is pretty much all inclusive I like to workout my ham, quads, and calves on my leg days..

The pain comes when I am walking especialy stairs are kicking my tail right now... I think if it persist I might make a run for the Doc and have them checked out.

J

RE: Knee pains (Marc David)

Good point.. I had some odd knee type pain and it was due to my lack of hamstring concentration. Once I started doing free weight squats and stiff-leg deadlifts, that went away.

But it was a pain that I didn't feel doing squats but I did feel when I did leg curls or walking.

I guess it depends on if you do overall leg development work or you concentrate mostly on the quads. Shera brings up a good point.

Stretching my hams helped my lower back as well.

RE: Knee pains (J)

 Thanks for the quick replies.

I just started taking glucosimine monday so I am not to sure how long it takes to get into the system.

Also I just bought new kicks but I will definately go over and reevaluate my leg exercises.

J

RE: Knee pains (Shera)

You know what I used to help with knee pain?? I tracked the cause down to needing new runners and muscle imbalance between quads and hammies....Since I've added more hammie specific exercises to my training, my knee doesn't bother nearly as much. Stretching out calves and hammies is good as well, since tight muscles can also cause knee pain.

RE: Knee pains (Marc David)

Have you checked into Glucosamine supplements?

That helped me with some elbow, forearm and knee pains due to heavy weights and usage.

I'm not sure any exercises are low impact on the knees. As it's a major supporting joint. If you've not ever taken or tried glucosamine, you might want to think about it.

It worked 100% for me.. and I know dgee swears by it.

If you aren't into that.. try an exercise bike or an elliptical machine where it's low impact aerobics to get the legs into shape without a bunch of stress on the knees.

That or just go super light on your leg days to acclimate the surrounding area.

But my vote is glucosamine.

Knee pains (J)

I have been laying off of my leg exercise due to knee pains. Can anyone recomend some leg exercises that are low impact on the knees till I get them up to par?

Thanks

J
