(rippedchick)

It depends on the lift for me. I usually push my best number on the 2nd-3rd set for bench but for deadlift I do 4-5 warm up sets before I pull my biggest weight i.e. 95x10, 135x5, 155x3, 175x3, 185x1 then add a little and try for another single like 195x1. Squat build up is similar.

RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (stalloneIs#1toMe)

its easier to just warm up with more sets gets your body primed for the lift its alot harder to lets say 225 315 and max lift 500

go for smaller weight incriments its okay to throw that many sets in just take more time in between sets

edit -- its just easier to lift that heavy once you warm up
RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (David1991)

does warming up with that high make your max higher? generally i dont do much warm up because i'm worried it will affect how much i can lift (but then again the ramping with bill starrs 5x5 definitely helped me lift more on the 5th set)

RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (stalloneIs#1toMe)

if you wanna check out what you can do when it comes to that day say you want to max your squat just do that ,

the day before and on that day - eat a bunch i mean seriously throw dieting and meal plans out the window eat as much good food as u can (dont make yourself sick be reasonable) last meal about 2 1/2 before the lift
for example the day i maxed my squat out i went from
135x15 225x10 275x8 315x6 365x5 405x3 455x2 485x1
and finally did my max taking up to 5 minutes to 7 minutes in between lifts and about 10 min before my max and i was done after that had the numbers came back exactly the week after and was back repping in the mid 400's

so prety much yeah you can max out and it wont hurt your gains in the following weeks just dont do any more excersizing that day just rest and you'll be lifting just as good the next day

u can trust calculaters to a certain point , i dont like what i see past 85% of max
RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (rippedchick)

Calculators are pointless IMO. I want to know what you have actually lifted not what a calculator tells you you could lift.

On one of your days max out instead of doing the 5x5 do a work up to a max and see where you're at. Maxing out won't hurt your gains.

RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (connelly)

yah true but i just got back from maxing deadlift when i saw this haha. i didnt really max i probably could've gotten a bit more and i just did deadlifts earlier today but w/e i got 185 and it was pretty damn hard to lock i might try and get 220 in a couple weeks cause it'll be double my body weight.thanks for the idea i think i might try the calculator but i think i'm still gonna do squats once my dad gets home to spot.

RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (thsfootball1)

There are some max calculators on the net if your really that interested in knowing your max, their not gonna be that accurate just some ballpark numbers like you said

RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (connelly)

i know i just wanted ball park numbers..bench has gone up 5 barbell rows 5 incline 10 squat 10 and the one im very happy about deadlifts have gone up 30 . been doing it for 3 weeks.

RE: would maxing hurt my gains? (David1991)

im not sure how much it would hurt your gains but it wouldnt make any sense. if you just did your max of 5 reps your probably not going to be able to get near your 1 rep max after that

btw how long have u been doing the 5x5 and how much have your lifts gone up?
would maxing hurt my gains? (connelly)

well i'm doing bill starr's 5x5 as some of you know but i dont know my squat of deadlift max's and i was wondering if i did them right after a workout would it jurt my gains?I know i wouldnt be able to max the most possible but i just want a ball park number but if it hurts my gains i dont want to do it..
