Thanks for all of the input though, I'll try some new techniques as soon as I can.

RE: Deadlift battle scars (HEARTS)

2-3
That's a bad idea you want to start with your shins on the bar, chances are your doing the lift right. look at any powerlifters calves they are all torn up or callused(spellcheck?) unless they wear socks.

a lot of guys put chalk on top of the socks too.

RE: Deadlift battle scars (dmobley01)

i have a small issue with that too.
Hold on I am going to find a video that will explain that really well for you.
RE: Deadlift battle scars (dmobley01)

yes, but a video of your form would be the only way to determine the problem if there is one.

RE: Deadlift battle scars (Neutralyze)

well does limb length have anything to do with it? if someone has shorter arms wouldnt it be harder to get the bar past the knees without bending them first(finishing the movement)?

RE: Deadlift battle scars (thehardway)

ORIGINAL: the Danimal

Someone else suggested chalk to me before, but that didn't do anything for me. I think the reason that I am scraping my shins is because I am straightening my back too soon, but I am doing that because I am worried about using too much back all at once. When I approach the bar, I keep my shins a good 2-3 inches away, but it always comes closer when I lift it. When should I start erecting my back - before or after it gets to my knees? I'll play around with it tomorrow to see how it goes.

Hips take over after the knees finish their part (mostly), knees get the bar over the knees, than your hips take over the movement.

If your scraping yourself that badley, your form is off, I believe.
RE: Deadlift battle scars (the Danimal)

Someone else suggested chalk to me before, but that didn't do anything for me. So I cover my legs with chalk when its available if not I wear soccer/ rugby socks.

RE: Deadlift battle scars (GTDude)

I have scraped my shins up pretty good powercleaning, so I know where you are coming from. I don't think mine have ever bled like you described but the bar has broken skin before. I just kinda deal with it when it happens to me, but if it is as bad as you are saying I second the long pants suggestion.

RE: Deadlift battle scars (Neutralyze)

when i first started to do them i got some pretty bad bruises on my knees. since then i have changed how i lower the bar to the best of my ability to avoid rounding my lower back.

RE: Deadlift battle scars (dmobley01)

i started to scrape pretty good too so i started to wear pants while deadlifting. I also started to try and keep the bar out a little bit. pants are a good start.

RE: Deadlift battle scars (jlp)

Same here. The bar actually hits me just under my kneecaps. But nothing that causes bleeding or anything.
