(localoutoftowner)

It depends on what kind of blood work you're having done. Some can even reach 500 dollars.

RE: Consult with healthcare professional before taking supps? (Dukoria)

I have severe allergies so i always consult my allergy specialist first. I've had quite a few that have recommended supplements to help my health and they led me in the right direction.
I also do lots of research into any supplement I take so I am more aware of any "drug interactions" that may take place with my current prescriptions. I.E - I can't take a potassium supplement because it can cause SEVERE issues (coronary) with me because of a certain prescription I am taking.
Blood tests can be done for around 30$ usually at a local lab. I know some cities have them and you don't need a prescription/Dr. order. call around and check them out. You get your results and then can consult with your Dr if you need to. Also look for local health fairs - less expensive if you don't have a good insurance plan.
RE: Consult with healthcare professional before taking supps? (Maverick620)

Yeah Bulking, that is exactly what I do, and I think it is the best way to find out about a product besides taking the supp. and seeing how well it reacts with your body.

ORIGINAL: bulkingup

I tried running it by my Family doctor...he really didn't know to much about the products...actually I asked a lot of questions that he really couldn't answer.
I research all of the products I take and search for online journals of people who have actually taken the products.

RE: Consult with healthcare professional before taking supps? (Maverick620)

I asked my Physician about the products I am taking listed below. He told me whey is fine, creatine can produce kidney stones if you do not drink enough water, and NO products, the one I am taking is straight L-Arginine, actually has a positive effect on your body including reducing Heart Disease, stopping headaches, promoting ED ( I'm 18, def. don't have a prob. with that), and wound healing.

RE: Consult with healthcare professional before taking supps? (optimumhealth)

We live in a "it won't happen to me" and "the end justifies the means" society. I personally ran supplements by my endocrinologist, GP, and Orthopedic specialist.....for the most part, they said "the results, if any, would not be worth the risks of taking these products". These included but were not limited to, fat burners, NO, energy drinks, and test boosters. They seemed quite alright with most herbal supplements and vitamin/mineral/EFA supplementations. They were also somewhat on the fence about creatine usage.

Consult with healthcare professional before taking supps? (JohnnyB21)

I have a question:

Do you consult with a Physician, Pharmacist, or other professionals before taking supps? If not, why not? This is your health we're talking about.

I'm not talking about supps such as protein or creatine. Everybody knows those are excellent. I'm talking about other supps that have the potential to really mess you up.

Before you start taking a test booster do you get your test level checked by a blood test? Are your test levels really that low?

If test levels are normal and you take a test booster, what effect does that have on your endocrine system (other hormones)? Do you know?

I'm honestly curious as to how many individuals get a blood test and discuss these issues with a MD before starting certain supps such as test boosters and cortisol blockers.

How many individuals here actually have the biochemical knowledge to know what is really going on when they start taking a supp?

My guess is that not many really give it much thought. They hear that a supp does this or that and think something like "That sounds good. That guy had good results while taking xyz supp. Think I'll try it too!". And then they go order it.

I'm not bashing anyone here, I'm just curious if people really know what they're doing or not. Also, would be interesting to know how many think they know what they're doing, but really don't.

Thanks.
JB
