The elbows should be put in front of the chest which means, under the bar. That's why you move them forward. If you let them go to the sides and back, it will be harder and the bar path will be wrong.

RE: Replacing OH for Military (pumped340)

but whats wrong with putting ur elbows to the side instead of in front of u?

should all shoulder presses have ur elbows in the front?

thats now what i usually see when looking how to perform them
RE: Replacing OH for Military (Tommy_Boy420)

ORIGINAL: brihead301

The link Wyrms posted is the way you should do it. That is one of the best upper body exercises in existence. Of course Oly lifts are better, but the majority of them usually start with the weight on the ground and end up being held over your head.

im a fan of olympic lifting, but doing them is antoher story lol
i dont like the fact your holding a 200lb bar over your/behind your head. doesnt seem so safe to me. i've seen many bbbing injuries but more olympic lifting injuries when lifting. Tried and tested. Apart from side raises the OH press is the only direct shoulder exercise I do.
RE: Replacing OH for Military (Wyrms)

 http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidAnterior/BBMilitaryPress.html

I agree with coldfire.
That bastardization everyone refers to as a Military Press is exactly how he put it; a good example of bodybuilders turning exercises into crap.
RE: Replacing OH for Military (coldfire)

ORIGINAL: boomersooner1331

they're actually different..........

Overhead only goes alittle past the BACK SIDE of the head.

Military press you bring infront of you face all the way down to the bottom of your throat.

they're both sitting down

i prefer military press, more movement and isolation

Good example of bodybuilders turning exercises into crap.

RE: Replacing OH for Military (RedJeep)

ORIGINAL: RedJeep

ORIGINAL: boomersooner1331

they're actually different..........

Overhead only goes alittle past the BACK SIDE of the head.

Military press you bring infront of you face all the way down to the bottom of your throat.

they're both sitting down

i prefer military press, more movement and isolation

Military press is an OH press, OH does not refer to the position of the bar in front or behind the neck, just that the press itself, is overhead.

Traditionally the military part refers to the position of the feet. Overtime the military press name has really evolved to an overhead press where the weight is brought to the top of the chest or in front of the body, or at least this is what most people refer to as a military press.

So what OH press do you not like? Barbell, dumbell, seated, standing, behind the neck?
