(zerocygnal)

Holy crap guys. That's a lot of great information and comparisons. Unfortunately when I posted that I was within an hour of leaving to check this gym out. BUT atleast by reading your posts I know I didn't get ripped off.

This place has Hammer machines I haven't even seen before, 20 treadmills with heart rate monitors on them, ellipticals, boxing, massage therapy, sauna, CHILD CARE! and even free personal trainers. Raquet ball, and a completely seperate womens area that is just as equiped. For those who like to mingle they have a co-ed area. They took my weight, did my BMI and BF% right there. I paid $49 to start and it's $29 a month there after for one year. After a year it goes to $15 a year. I met Mr.Ohio while I was there too, he trains there. Pretty cool place, I was expecting this small hole in the wall place in a shopping center. (Mostly because they didn't have a website)

Thanks for the info!

RE: Fitness Club Pricing (What's fair?) (mhartman)

I'm in Kingston Ontario Canada, it's halfway between Toronto and Ottawa and about 20-25 mins from the border to the US.

Oh and my wife slapped me, I guess we have 20 each of the ellipticals and treadmills. Shows how much I use them eh? I just walk by them on the way upstairs.

RE: Fitness Club Pricing (What's fair?) Damn my gym is looking better and better for $18 US a month! I didn't mention the sauna or half of the other stuff too.

Suddenly I feel a lot better about where I am :) Did I mention that my DSL costs me $18 US a month too? hah!

hey, where do you live? I'm getting killed up here. Dsl and Cable cost the same -- $40/month.

Then again, this is the most taxed state in the US!

RE: Fitness Club Pricing (What's fair?) (slayerboy)

I used to work out at a local chain called Rochester Athletic Club. It was $50 a month, with a trainer (wasn't all that bad, at least he got me started working out). They closed at 11PM. I love working out at night anywhere from 8PM and later, and it still seemed like a fight the last few months i was there. I now have a home gym with a bench w/ squat "racks", leg "machine", and a preacher bench. I started with a 400lb olympic barbell/plate set. I've added close to 100lbs in extra plates. I have two dumbbells (bigger than hell). We have a treadmill that can't go faster than 4mph or it grinds (yeah, I know...) and a stationary bike that feels like it will fall apart when I ride it because I go so fast (can't help it if i have muscular legs). IT's all packed in a cramped basement. I need some mirrors in there and a lat pulldown attachment for the bench and I'll be happy.

But I'm looking at World Gym or Bally's Total Fitness because I miss the variety of machines sometimes. I just don't like how expensive they are. And since I worked out at Midnight last night, I need a gym that's pretty much open 24 hours, and World Gym is the only one. Last year when I was looking for rates, it was $45 a month but no trainer.

RE: Fitness Club Pricing (What's fair?) (jenng)

I work out at Golds. It is not that big (although they have been promising an expansion for months - whatever!). If I go anytime around 5-7pm, it's a fight for benches and good treadmills. But there are around 6-7 good TMs, 6-7 crappy ones, around 15 (crappy) ellipticals (one good one), 15 bikes, some steppers, most every kind of weight machine, 3 stupid smith machines, 2 of every bench and a fitness room with classes.

It's $39/mo. I would much rather pay closer to $25-30, but I get "free" personal training there. (From my TP, not the idiots who work there) It's nice to know someone who works out at the same gym. But being in a big suburban area (with lots of overweight people willing to join the gym in January), I'm not sure there are too many cheaper options.

RE: Fitness Club Pricing (What's fair?) (mhartman)

I think you're going to find a big variance here.

I work out at a GoodLife gym (a big chain, not sure if it's in the US or not). It's huge, two floors of a massive building. There's 12 ellipticals, 12 treadmills, 4-5 stair climbers, etc etc.. Tons of tv's, wireless CD players, huge dedicated free weight area, group exercise programs as part of the membership, tanning room, massage therapists, personal trainers.. On and on, I love it. Costs me $24 Canadian per month (about $18 US), but I have a corporate membership so it's normally half that.

Some people work out at gyms that have 2-3 ellipticals, what do you pay?

Fitness Club Pricing (What's fair?) (zerocygnal)

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong area. I finally gained some free time to schedule a more intense fitness program into my schedule. I am at a desk job again with an hour lunch.
I called a place nearby called Premier Fitness in Miamisburg, OH. The owner seemed like a real friendly kinda person. However the one thing that caught my attention as it always does when trying to find a gym, was the question about induvidual membership pricing. They always seem to completely avoid that question and demand you come in for a face to face. I'm not totally against this, I want to see the place and what they have to offer. The owner explained that this gym was open 24 hours durring the week and that most of his customers are dedicated to body building, and not your average thrice weekly workout Joe. If that's true then there should be a good amount of information and education here.

What's a fair price for a membership to a privately owned gym like this?

Hi Marc!
