Are you asking whether or not it's worth eating a protein bar unless it's close to your workout?
First of all, your body needs plenty of protein all day, every day. Second, it's not just about protein- Your body needs a certain amount of calories each day in order to effectively build muscle, and you should make sure those calories are coming from the right sources of protein, carbs and fats for good results- Just eating a protein bar before or after your workout is NOT going to get you good gains.
Finding out how many calories you need each day, and using the best food sources to get them into your system will get you where you want to be. Forget the protein bars if you don't already have the rest of your diet in place- They're not going to do anything by themselves. Check out the top of our nutrition forum for the post about calorie calculators- Use the info to find out how many calories you're going to need every day to put on mass. Then, post that number here, and we'll try to help put together a meal plan.
RE: Protein consumtion without workout (BouSa_ToWn)

Eating alot of protein alone helps build muscle, im 16, and were teenagers so wer still growin, so say u dont workout, but u eat tons of protein, ur still gonna build muscle because the protein in itself is good for ur muscles and thats what muscles are built up from,So yea they will still help, but u have to workout to actuallly become really muscular and strong lol. Most people our age dont even get the right nutrition, thats why there all 100 pound scronny weak kids lol. 150 isent that bad for 6"1, its thin, but im guessing ur not super scronny or anything, honestly tho man protein bars are a waste of money, they got like 20-30grams of protein in them, just get a weight gainer if ur lookin to gain weight, they got like 60grams of protein in one serving, they taste like milkshakes and they will help u gain weight alot faster, but watch out, if u take them too much ur get fat, because there not normal protein shakes, they got high amount of fat in them to help ppl gain, but if u workout and take them ull be fine. And also if ur trying to gain weight dont do any cardio, stop fo awhile intil u gain what u want, just still to weightlifting and no cardio.

Go to www.bodybuilding.com and look at there supplement section, they got everything there, ur have a wide selection of things to look at that will help u gain weight, they also got protein bars if u still want to get those, they sell them cheap there so ur get a good deal on them, but in stores there like 2-4 dollars for one bar(atleast here they are) and i think thats a rip, u can get a hole box on this site for like 10-15 bucks. Heres some articles that talk about good ways to gain weight and stuff http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbinfo.php?page=MassGainDiets

Heres some other sites that might help

http://www.gnc.com/sm-sports-nutrition-nitric-oxide-weight-gainers--fi-2108309_cp-2102347.html

http://www.nutritionalsupplements.com/indexwg.html

http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/protein/champion-nutrition-heavy-weight-gainer-900.htm
these are just sites showing different types of weight gainers and talks about them.
Protein consumtion without workout (afisch)

So im just getting started with this whole... trying to gain weight thing.

Im 17, 6'1 and weigh... 145-150lbs wanting to be in the 160's atleast

For the last week or so, ive been looking at... and buying Protein bars...
Looking for ones... such as the atkins protein... with 20g of protein 0g sugar...
(i dont purchase ones with much sugar because... if i eat much sugar acni goes crazy)

My question is... I eat a protein bar right before my workout...
but since i cant constantly workout to eat the protein bars...

Does... eating these protein bars... before or after meals, help build muscle? even though im not working out while eating them, does it still give the same effect? and help me gain weight?

Thanks,
Aaron
