Both have their advantages on the issue pertaining to pain. Considering many nerves supplying your back stem through your spinal cord, there is validity in both professions assessing your situation. From my own experiences, they are relatively cheap to have a check up / adjustments performed.

In other words, there may be a larger picture at hand. When I first began weight resistance training, there was much restriction in some of my movements (specifically working shoulders), where I have had 'twinges' in my back before. After seeking X-Rays as a method of seeing the structure of my spine, I had scoliosis (curvature of the spine), which in effect created my Os Coxa to be uneven / slanted across the body, (one side higher than the other), and so too created problems in the cervical region of the body. That is, one issue linked to the next, which created the next.

It is all remedied now, however; this is just one example of how larger problems can be undetected for sometime; with 'back twinges' , or minor pain being a signal to be properly, and thorroughly checked up. Your health is priority number 1, before your looks I would imagine.

Furthermore, the more you work out your back, the more strength it will gather. Back twinges can happen due to awkward sleeping, or due to inappropriate lifting techniques (pertaining to every day life, not specifically gym work). It may take a couple of days, but well strengthened backs are able to repair themselves over time - Which further supports CPL's suggestion to rest for a period to ensure your back repairs its self prior to re-focusing on gym training.

Hopefully this was of some help.

Cheers.
RE: strained back (cpl)

I wouldn't recommend trying to block the pain so you can workout- Pain is your body's way of letting you know something's wrong. It could be minor, in which case it'll be gone soon- But why take the chance of turning a minor irritation into a major injury?
We all know our own bodies best. If you even have to ask about it here, it's probably worth leaving the weights alone until the pain's gone at the least- Better than that, you could go get checked out- Just because it feels the same as last time might not mean it is the same. Give it a few days, see how you feel.
strained back (Reaper)

i had this same problem before, my doctor said it was strained muscle or something ? i probably slept awkwardly or something .. causing back spasm or something i dont know .. but my middle back hurts .. this time only on the right side ..

i took a week off from working out .. and the day before i go back to working out .. my back hurts .. is there anything i can do to stop the pain so i can get back to working out ?

or i just need to wait it out till its gone ? because thats what i did last time .. but i really want to get back to working out as soon as possible ..
