Working the same muscle group twice in the same day is a no-go. Working the same muscle group more than twice a week or so isn't good, so twice a day is definitely out- Here's how it works. The three main rules for building muscle are to Eat, Train, and rest. Eating is simple enough- Get enough calories into your system so that your body has something to build new muscle with. Five or six meals a day's worth. Training- Work out each muscle group, challenging it to grow. All a workout is is basically a signal to your body that it needs to build more muscle. In order to send that signal, you don't have to do a hell of a lot- Three or four exercises, three or four sets per, for a general idea- There are tons of good routines out there where the numbers vary, but my point is that you don't need to do eight different exercises for your chest with so many reps you can't even move anymore. At that point, you're actually hurting your gains.
When it comes to the last of the three golden rules, the rest, a lot of people have a lot of misconceptions. Muscle grows while it's at rest, not while you're in the gym. And by rest, I mean a few days- It takes time for a body to grow muscle. If you don't give it enough time to grow after a workout, you're just interrupting the muscle growth, and it has to start all over again- Hence, you won't see much in the way of progress. More work is not always better- There are routines out there that have you working each muscle group just once a week, and the gains from such a plan are very real. Some people don't feel like it's enough- They think that if you only work your chest or shoulders or whatever once a week, you'll start to get weaker and lose muscle- Absolutely not true at all. The same way it takes the body some time to build it, it takes time to lose it. You won't even notice strength loss for a couple of weeks in most cases, and most of that is not due to muscle loss at all- It's because your muscles become out of practice, and sort of "forget" how to lift the weights most effectively.
Anyway, hope this answers your question.
RE: training (fatboymuscle)

Well what are you attempting to accomplish?

Weight loss it is good, you rev up the metabolism in the morning, be active throughout the day doing your daily routine, then do another workout in the evening, the metabolism is juiced up.

Muscle gains, It may be catabolic if your workout is over 1 1/2 - 2 hours total. So do 30 min in morning and 30 min to 1 hour in evening or vice a versa.

Any other input here peeps?

ORIGINAL: jimbo369

How do people feel about working about twice a day.
