my dad recently lost around 40lbs in this herbal magic diet/supplement program. hes now about 195lbs , and stands around 6 feet. age 49 his bf is unknown .... he was all gut anyway... so he wasnt all blubbery.... just had one of those solid beer belleys hahah anyway he now wants to tone up , but in my opinion he doesnt have much to tone so i thought he should build abit , he wont listen , just wondering what i could set him up with to tone up , also he is a diabetic. i was considering giving him a 3 day full body .... not sure if he should do reps 8-10 or if he does 15 + being that hes never worked out before im sure that the 15 plus range will still put muscle on him , and then 1 or two days of cardio , plus maybe like .5 mile or a mile warmup each day on an olyptical or tredmil.. this sound good or should he do a 5 day split?.. thanks!

ease him inot lifitng and make sure he understands why he's doing certain exercises and how to do them correctly. Generally speaking for older populations you want to combat the atrophy of muscle that occurs later in life. I would stick to a 6-12 rep range with 12-15 sets per muscle group (as in chest/tri's 15 max total). Make sure to have him eat some food with a medium glycemic index prior to working out so he doesnt run out of steam or become hypoglycemic while working out and worse case pass out and get injured.

the glycemic index is a ranking system based on how quickly a certain carb will be absorbed into the body. For example sugar has a very high glycemic index as it lmost immediately is absorbed, while pasta a complex carb takes much longer. here is a good list of food with their corresponding glycemic index number. http://www.glycemicedge.com/glycemicindextable.html

Go easy on him. The tendons are weak and it would make him very uncomfortable to over work them. Having never worked out, he is starting from ground zero. Toning is the first place to start. Break up his work outs to pushing/pulling days. What this is is to do chest/ triceps one day, back/biceps another, shoulders/abs another and have him do the 'Gauntlet' [large, rotating stairs] for aerobics and legs. I am an old guy but started lifting in 1973. Recuperation at this age is very important and we don't have the testosterone levels or human growth hormone to build muscle quickly. Hope this helps!
