I used to watch the clock but I don't anymore. I have a feel for how long it takes to go again so that's how I do it now. Usually lower rep exercises require more rest.

Doesn't the length of rest period depend on your body type and goals.

until i feel i can get the next set normaly 2-3 minutes..

Just out of curiosity coldfire, do you train more for strength or mass?

If so, do you think routines that you have supported, such as Mark Rippetoe's is great for hyperthropy or is it decent for muscle mass as well?

I'm thinking of giving Rippetoe a shot this August, and will pm you some questions if you don't mind.

Back to the original topic, my rest time depends: if I lift heavy (for me), I would rest for >2 minutes. If I lift moderate weights, I rest for about 45-60 seconds.


I train for strength, but I got from 190lbs to 215lbs in a year with what you call "Strength routines".

Squats and Deadlifts: Around 60-90 secs
All other exercises: 20-40 secs

If it wasn't painfully difficult then you didn't do it right
