both are equal, personal preference would be the deciding factor.  why not just go buy a bike?

I agree ride a real bike and if you really want to watch tv while you do it put it on a stand (you could probably make one easily).

I get a much better work out on a real bike for two reasons:
a.) there isnt much opportunity to get off whenever you want -  you still have to ride back
b.) its more fun

Yes real bikes are better, but if the case is you're getting a stationary bike:

Get an upright bike. I've been using one for about 4 weeks now to heal up from a calf strain, and the upright bikes put more stress on the calf, hamstrings, and quads than the upright IMO. Personally, my hamstrings were more flexible after an intense 60 minute hill workout on the stationary bike than they were after a XC race. Now track is a different story.

Get an upright bike, LifeFitness is the brand of bike my gym has I believe.
