Any of you notice that the older you get, the soreness last longer after introducing a new exercise? Or an injury has a longer recovery time?

For me I find the sore muscle feeling takes longer to kick in. It use to notice it the next day now it's longer than that. Now that I think about it, maybe an extra day or recovery when I do push too hard.

Just started back at the gym again after a 20 year rest. That was three days ago and I am still sore. I tried not to push to hard the first time, but I think I over did it. I will be going back tomorrow I hope.

Bench, just because they don't feel sore anymore doesn't mean they are completely recovered.

ORIGINAL: Steelmagnolia Any of you notice that the older you get, the soreness last longer after introducing a new exercise? Or an injury has a longer recovery time? I'm 67 and feel sore at times but, for the most part I have been feeling great. I started training at home steady after retiring at 62 and was sore most of the time but, as Andy and Gun Ryo mentioned protein and glutamine are great supps to help recovery. I found that Glutamine was the supp that really helped me recover more than anything. I remember that a 3-day split took me took me 9 days,i.e., 2 days to recover after each workout. Then I started taking Glutamine, 10g before and after my w/o and then 5g before bedtime for four weeks. After that, I was able to do a normal 3-day split. Presently, I still take Protein & Glutamine (only 10g after w/o)along with other supps. My workouts now consist of a 5-day split with very little soreness if any. I feel great, look great (physically that is). Just remember that supps are just that. They are enhancements to your regular diet. So eat well, train hard, get plenty of rest and enjoy life. (God, I do sound like an old man). Peace

Since turning 50, I've noticed that my recovery time has increased significantly. I've had to incorporate an additonal day or two of rest into my schedule each week. I've also noticed that it is an uphill battle trying to maintain my weight. If I relax and gain 5 or 10 pounds, it is a real struggle to get rid of it.

Hey Calvin43215; Haven't been on this thread for a while but, I "hear" what your saying. You've got to have a plan when you make a commitment to exercising. It's for your own good and well being. Here's what I do. Maybe, there's something here you can use to benefit yourself. Presently, I'm on a four day split. I make sure I have a night time protein shake and good night’s sleep. Up at 5:00am. I w/o at home in the early a.m., between 6-7:30. I take my supps w/ adequate time before my w/o. Have my pre-planned routine ready to go, along w/ water, towel and chalk. Turn my radio on to good EZ listening jazz. Do my routine w/all the intensity I can. Try to eat clean as I can. Plenty of water, Vitamins, Protein shakes and Omega oils throughout the day. Adequate rest between w/o’s. There are times when I awake and don’t feel like exercising but, once I get going I’m fine. It seems when I have these off days of not wanting to workout is when I have my best w/o’s. Stay in touch. There's a lot of good advice on this board. Peace
