quick HST question - Wednesday, October 15, 2008 12:13 PM
finally got around to figuring out my HST routine. my question is for switching between squats and deadlifts: should i start both at their respective 70% of max? or should i be doing something like:

day 1 with squats at 70%
day 2 with deadlifts at 75%
day 3 with squats at 80%
day 4 with deadlifts at 85%
etc.

guess i probably should've figured this out before hand, but it never came to mind and i can't really find an answer to it.

I would start both at 70% or whatever. No need to complicate it. HST is about progressive loading. Just find a good starting spot and go from there. Also I'd recommend squatting and deadlifting every workout if you can handle it.

i went ahead and moved up to 75% for deadlift. i figure it'll work out fine. for at least the first cycle i'm going to alternate between the 2. don't want to get ahead of myself and overload it. sets of 15 are kicking my ass enough as it is.

both at 70% make each jump so the % end on 100%, and possibly go further then 100%

so

1.) 70 squat
2.) 70 dl
3.) 85 squat
4.) 85 dl
5.) 100 squat
6.) 100 dl

and if you can go higher after 100%, extend your mini cycle to compensate.

7.) 105
8.) 105

for example. When I did hst it was always squats monday/friday and deads every wednsday. I would it like that if your structuring it like you said.

isn't that sort of selling dead lifts short if i'm doing squats twice as much instead of alternating?

No, both exercises are very taxing on the body.

but if your doing heavy deadlifts one day is plenty. It has a lot to do with how you set up your routine or what routine your on. but to answer your question easily, no you are not shorting yourself.

abs are fine either way I personally do mine after my workouts.

If you do run, I would save it for off days.
