protein after abs/cardio - Tuesday, August 04, 2009 7:12 PM ( #1 )
I'm just trying to cut some fat while keeping as much muscle as possible. I'm doing starting strength right now, and have included a small ab workout. When I do cardio on the rest days I do either HIIT, or 15mins or so of rowing. Would taking Iso protein immediately after cardio be offsetting the fat I'm trying to lose? I know that during cut diets its important to keep carbs low n protein relatively high so I didn't think it would be bad, but I'm not certain. Is it?

because it's such an intense form of exercise u run the risk of going catabolic and burning precious muscle if u don't fuel and re-fuel it correctly.

No you dont. The best times to run if your aiming for fat loss is in the morning after fasting all night and after your workout...

...and its because your glycogen levels are low.

And HIIT is a great way to accomplish that in a shorter amount of time compared to a slower state cardio and a longer time. Carbs after, yeah thats what you want...but not before.

Now if your doing HIIT for performance or a sport then I would completely agree.

If you were to carb up before or during HIIT/cardio, you will burn that as energy before fat, right?  And since the cardio, especially HIIT, is aerobic (oxygen consuming?) fat is burned instead of muscle?  And the fat burning continues post HIIT as EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption).  Does that mean respiration and heart rates are elevated post HIIT?   When is muscle the prefered energy source over fat, during high intensity strength anaerobic activity when glycogen is depleted?  I have also read that your body is willing to sacrifice unused muscle but sacrifices heavily used (and micro-damaged through strength training?) muscle only as a last resort survival mechanism.  Do I have it right?

yeah, in the mornings though I would take a scoop of protein (about 20g's) 30 mins prior to running or some BCAA's before as well.

Most of the fuel for high-intensity cardio comes from using stored glycogen from the body's energy reserves. This type of exercise has a more dramatic impact on cardiovascular endurance than low-intensity work, but is not recommended for those on low-carbohydrate diets, as the body's main source of glycogen is from carbohydrate intake.

Your bodies main source of energy for any exercise is going to be glycogen. Sure if you eat some carbs before and after you'll perform better. But if your trying to lose fat you don't want to be doing that.

Just eating under maintenence and u will lose fat, so technically u don't need any cardio but that's not the point I'm making.

U want to maximise your performance and do everything u can to make sure u don't go catabolic and burn muscle, to do this u need to target carbs around intense training.

U can cut carbs out the rest of the meals if u want and make sure u keep your cal input  under maintenence.

remember as well u don't want to lose more than 1lb a week or so if u want to eat into muscle .

An HIIT session is going to last how long? 20 min? 30 min? Your not gonna lose all your muscle from that because you didn't eat carbs first.
I agree that for optimal performace you want some carbs, AND you can and will still lose weight if you do eat the carbs before if the rest of your diet is on. BUT you will lose it easier without eating the carbs before.

Thanks to all!  GB, I think you summed it up for me.  Not going to eat into muscle w/20 min of HIIT.  If you can do an intense HIIT w/o carbs, great.  If you need some carbs to boost performance, that would be okay too since the increased performance will also increase the EPOC.  Right?

Carbs before HIIT can result in a marked increase in performance, which results in a marked increase in calories burned during and after exercise.  This "fasted cardio" stuff is highly overrated; don't be afraid to eat a little before cardio.  But the important thing is: just get it done.

I don't think it increases your performance enough to warrent eating carbs before and after if your aim is fat loss.

If you're on a very low-carb diet, I can see why you'd shy away from them.  But, assuming you keep your daily caloric intake the same either way and just shift some carbs around to allow for pre-cardio nutrition, there's absolutely reason that fasted cardio should help you burn fat better than fed cardio.
