post workout whey with food and other liquids. - Friday, June 06, 2008 8:12 AM
wen ive done a workout, i have the post shake. but often im starving and want some carbs as well.

i try to leave it about 45mins after ive had a shake, but often ill have a lucozade or energy drink w.e u call em over there.

but does the consumption of food aka jus a normal balanced meal or other liquids like energy drink affect the asorbtion of the whey. or can i just have w.e i want?

Consume simple carbs with your whey pwo, as they digest very quickly as well.  You want something with a good dextrose/fructose ratio with minimal sucrose, and bananas are a fruit with one of the best ratios.  That's what most people consume with their whey.  That should tide you over til your next meal, which should come shortly after (within an hour IMO, but doesn't HAVE to be).

You can also make your own custom shake that has a 1:1 ratio of dextrose/maltodextrin.  Alot of people do that.

I've been taking a scoop of whey isolate with my shake before AND after each of my workouts, I don't workout vigorously though.

it is not wise to wait so long after your workout to get food in you

after you work out, your body is in the worst catabolic state possible, and your muscles are hungry for whatever you got, so they immediatly start taking whatever you have

you need to calculate the number of carbs and protein you need based on your forced reps per workout and eat that exact amount.

but like i said, you need to have something for your muscles to gobble up, or they will begin breaking down

well that's good then.

but it is really important to calculate your needed carbs and protein after a workout. you do this by the number of forced reps you do during a workout (reps you can't do without a spotter)

if you want, i can throw the equation on here for you so you can see how many grams of each you need.

if you don't get enough, your muscles won't grow as much as they can.

if you get too much, it'll turn to fat

Seems super scary. What if I have to wait 15 minutes after my workout for my aunt to finish up what she's doing?

Btw, if you're looking for a weight gainer (I know I've posted this everywhere) for pre workout, try:

1-2 scoops whey
2-3 cups milk
1/2 cup oats (tastes terrible if you have too much)
1 tbsp peanut butter
1 banana (medium)

For post workout, you can try some cheerios or something.

take a protein shake with you to the gym and some type of food that you can eat right afterwards

Does this mean I've been losing muscle mass the entire time?

no, not necissarily.  not in a literal sense atleast.

it means you haven't been maximizing the potential muscle growth you could be achieving

Hm, that sucks, haha. I've gained like 6 lbs in 7 or so weeks, but my arms progressed terribly (only grew a cm). I'm gonna start bringing some food to the gym and seeing how that goes. I really don't wanna drink my whey shake when it's cold though, haha.

just make sure you get the right kinds of food

and are you sure that all that weight you've gained is muscle?
