I have a really big question to ask about protein supplementation. I am on the Atkins diet, and I just started working out at the gym, doing 20 min. of cardio, and then I weight train for 40 min. I am using a low-carb protein powder (called 100 Whey by Optimum Nutrition). So far I have lost 32 pounds on the diet, it is working wonderfully for me! I have also noticed my muscles are getting bigger very slowly. THIS IS THE BIG QUESTION: Can I stay on a low-carb diet, use a proteing powder, weight train 4 to 5 days a week like I have been doing, and grow muscles??? The reason I ask is because there is so much controversy about it. Some people have told me I MUST consume LOTS of carbs in order to get bigger muscles. Well, this is great except for the fact that if I start taking in more carbs again, I will probably gain all the weight back that I fought so hard to lose. OR, I have heard other people tell me that this is just a bunch of BS, and it is most certainly possible to gain muscle while on a low carb diet. So what is the truth? Do I really need to part with my low carb diet to gain muscle, or can I stay on it, and just use the protein powder (along with the weight training) to help gain muscle? Before you answer, let me make something clear! I don't want to get HUGE like a professional body builder, the only thing I want is to look toned. I am 21 yrs old/male if that helps too. Thank you to ANYONE who can give me advice on this matter!!!

So there you go. It's very possible. I'm not speaking to the health ramifications of low-carb, only answering your precise question. Muscle is made of protein. It certainly sounds like you have not eliminated that from your diet. And you are supplementing with a protein shake. You outta be just fine for your goals. Lose weight, get a little toner and some muscle and then maintain. You said: quote:

I have also noticed my muscles are getting bigger very slowly And since you don't want to get HUGE or gain tons of muscle fast, the carbs, tons of protein, all that other stuff is irrelevant in your particular case. quote:
Do I really need to part with my low carb diet to gain muscle, or can I stay on it, and just use the protein powder (along with the weight training) to help gain muscle? Stay on it.. until you don't notice anything happening anymore. Truth: You are the proof. You are on the low carb diet. You are gaining muscle slowly. There you go.

Ok, thanks for replying back. It helps alot. One last question. I take in 1 gram of protein for each lbs. of body weight (I don't know if this is too much or too little), and I just wanted to know if I have to do this every single day, or just on the days I work out? Lets say like I stop using the protein for just one or two days, would that have a significant impact, or would that be ok? Thanks.

I just wanted to know if I have to do this every single day, or just on the days I work out? Daily. Your body grows and repairs and recovers when you are not in the gym. So nutrition is a daily thing.. Not just a when I go to the gym days thing. quote:
Lets say like I stop using the protein for just one or two days, would that have a significant impact, or would that be ok? No biggie.. as long as you are consistent on a daily basis. If you go away for a weekend and don't have access.. you can either get it via real foods, or not worry about it. In your case, your goals, it won't matter. But generally speaking, 1g of protein per 1lb of body weight is the standard. Drink lots of water (1 gallon a day) and don't skip unless you have to. 2 days is not a big deal. 2 days every single week is not consistent. Does that make sense?
