opinion and bodyfat - Tuesday, October 27, 2009 8:37 PM ( #1 )
Ok just a simple question and bodyfat guess wanted by you fine people.

first, judging by my avatar where would you guess my bodyfat is?

second, some of you may know a big goal of mine is to walk on to a d1 football program. Judging by my avatar would you guys say im in d1 shape? I obviously have some way to go regarding strength, but it will get there. Im pretty fast for a big guy, but I am unsure of just what my 40 is atm, but I recently just started training to get faster, dropping bodyfat, running incline/steps etc. So based solely on my physical apperence how would you judge?

Im a bit of a "late" bloomer having started seriously training again over a year ago, but I am also going back to school as a freshman, due to some bull**** non transferable credits. So if I do walk on, I will have 4 years of eligibility. Go figure. But yeah im pretty serious about it, whether I make it or not, play or not this is something im putting my all into.

im trying to asses where I am physically right now a little better so some of your opinions would really help out!

forgot to add, im sitting around 218 right now. and I will be aiming to play mainly a skill position, but not limited too of some kind. Think receiver, h-back, safety, OLB... thats what I would like to be judged on.

You're tall and strong (especially in the lower body) so yeah, I'd definitely say good enough for D1. Power cleans, deadlifts, and squats are basically the best exercises you can do for football (with presses, of course). You've developed all of those pretty good.

Judging from your avatar I'd say maybe 12-15%, probably around 13%, although I could be wrong.

Judging from your avatar, height, and abilities I'd say you'd make a wicked WR or TE.

u just gotta remember some of these guys have been playing that position for years, there is some skill to it , if i was you nm i would start learning a specific position because you cant really walk on and be like ya iill play whatever.

and you need to go time your 40 thats such a crucial number to know and so you can get a baseline to what you need to do ie get faster etc.

Do you do alot of drills to get fast foot work

I bet you can do it man i have faith

heh, I know. I have been playing football for quite some time myself.

Im just asking for opinions based purely on my physique and my 1rm are in my sig as well. I gave examples of positions to give an idea of what I might play, I will most likely be going for a wide receiver.

I suppose the whole point of this is to figure out if I am really at a good size muscle wise, I am starting to train for more speed and power now anyway since I have been eating at a deficit, its why lately I have been doing a lot of stairs/incline HIIT cardio. I just wanted some peoples opinions about where im at physically right now is all.

I probably have a good 5-6 months before spring walk-ons.

size wise you are there. strength needs to improve for a d1 school, i would think. and you already said you're working on quickness and speed. you were also doing a lot of cardio interval training as well, before, so i assume your stamina is on it's way. i would agree that you look like you'd be a great TE if you have the hands and quick feet to back it up.

6ft3 is good but you seem a little thick for a reciever to me(unless maybe a small tight end).As you already know its all gonna depend on your speed and hands anyway.

I know nothing about football so have no advice there.   I think you look fantastic especially considering you're a tall 6'3" and are about 220, little of which is fat.  Wish you all the best as you strive to live out your dreams!  Good workin' out!  :)

I dont have a workout partner or really anyone to talk to about this kind of stuff much. I just didnt want to get too caught up in the physical aspect, because I know its important, but I know the big thing is speed and skill. Im working on it, but obviously you guys cant help me out with that.

I little reassurance is nice sometimes, I just wanted to hear if I was heading in the right direction.

Thanks for your opinions, I appreciate it!

We need numbers not a picture lol.  There's some huge guys that would suck at football because they dont have the attitude or they're just not naturally strong or quick.  Ex. most bodybuilders.

WR?  Id drop all of tha fat and get my oly/squat numbers up (just talking about weight training not sports-specific).  Do you know your vertical?

Re:opinion and bodyfat - Wednesday, October 28, 2009 8:21 PM ( #15 )
heh, im working on dropping the fat, been eating at a deficit for the past 3 weeks or so, going pretty well so far. just a couple hundred to 500 under on a regular basis, not low carb either. Im thinking of trying keto here in a few weeks but im worried about my energy levels and strength gains, because im still pushing some solid gains even though im eating below maintenance.

The whole idea behind this was I felt like I was at a pretty good point physically, I just wanted to hear what other people had to say.

Im actually planning to head in the direction of more oly lifts. Once I get done with this Madcows, I will be doing something tailored more for football. involving front squats, more cleans etc. I do not know my vertical, I know I can almost dunk a basketball but that doesnt tell me too much. When I ran the 40 yd dash about 2 years ago, I ran my first one at 4.6 and second one at 4.9...not spectacular, but 2 years ago I wasnt in the shape im in now I was just lighter, I believe I was around 190 when I played for that semi pro team back then.

thing is I have always had a fairly big/strong looking frame regardless of how much I weighed, more on the lanky side back then though. I played tight end back in high school and tight end for that semi pro team, at 190, I played as a receiving tight end.

now my goal is to hit a 4.5 before I go in for spring walk ons. I want to get my vert, 40 and height tested here pretty soon and keep progress of those just like I do strength gains...Im starting to think im closer to 6'2" especially with my shoes off.

in general im a pretty good athlete, im quick and fast especially for my build and weight atm, always have been. I have good hands, and even on defense I wrap people up well...

but everyone is right, im really going to have to focus on my speed.

sadly I dont know many people who are serious about lifting weights, or even have goals like mine. I feel stupid when I tell people I want to walk on to the football team, most people are negative...not many but I have gotten a few you wont ever make it's. I honestly wish I knew some of you in real life and could lift with you guys, haha.

anyway thanks again guys.

F*CK THEM!

If you want it and you do, who cares what they think... That is just bull sh*t and I am a super pragmatic, realistic, feet firmly based in reality ok actually quite a pessimistic person.

Trying to make and failing is 1000 x's better than not trying at all. If you don't make it, fine you'll deal with it, you are back in school, working on a future that is not football dependent, (it is not like you banking on turning pro after college).

Your giving it your best damn shot... it is much better than looking back on your life 10 years form now, and are going to wonder what would have happened if you would have tried... Regrets are a terrible thing. You can never go back only forward... Live life with out regret Nm0ney.

You know what you need to work on, you know how to tailor your training, you have been working so F'in hard, over the last year and it is obvious... someone whispering in your ear your destined for failure... is so absolutely unnecessary, you should pay them zero attention.

People don't understand you, your dreams... well they don't have to. You only one who needs to understand them, and your the one who needs to work towards them...

You'll try for spring walk on's this year, if you don't make it, you'll have a very, very good idea what you will need to work on for next year...

if you never make it you can look back and know that you gave it your very, very best shot... and really in life in general that is all you can do...

i'll tell you what, though... I completely undrestand where your coming from, the lack of training partners... I have nobody to train with... all I hear is what you do is too hard, I would never do that... the only way I would pick that up is if you paid me....and I have not even been working at that high of an intensity level recently... I understand how depressing it is to train alone... so you have my sympathy/empathy on that one.

Your a sweetheart Hardway,

Yeah I know just how society can and usually is towards ones aspirations and goals. I was just stating, it almost feels dumb to try to explain it to people who dont care or give a ****, or who are just going to be negative anyway.

but you are indeed right, and thats exactly how im striving to look at it. People would rather put you down and tell you you cant do something because they cant or dont have the drive and focus to do it themselves.

:)

nmoney i have alot of friends that play college football, definately not d1 lol but physically you're there. i mean christ look at those tree trunks you call your legs! absolutely massive. only thing i could say is to hammer the power clean. it will add explosiveness and speed(as im positive you already know). the only thing i see lacking is that, the clean. alot of the starters are cleaning 280+ at under 200 lbs( on my buddies' teams at least). so i know if you spent these next 6 months cleaning 3 times a week you'd have no problem fitting in at a d1. clean heavy and clean often till you look like you dont have a neck.
first day with no buds, 11/17, need a new job. 1 down 13 to go.
